This book is a long overdue treat for jewelers, blacksmiths, sculptors, and all artists of metalwork. It has information on chasing and repouss in greater depth and detail than any other volume today available in the English language. Painstakingly translated from German this text is a valuable resource for both the professional and the hobbyist. Adolf Steines is clearly a master metalworker who enthusiastically demonstrates his creativity, knowledge, skill, and experience. The book thoroughly addresses the workroom, tools, materials, working surfaces (including carpeting and pitches), transfer of designs, sinking, raising, stamping, chasing, repouss, engraving, soldering, etching, as well as the coloring and protection of metal surfaces. Numerous examples of the author's works are illustrated including large scale doors, fountains, memorials, wall sculptures and portraits, as well as many delicate jewelry pieces. A number of tricks and special techniques are described, such as using air powered hammers for forming and chasing. Profusely illustrated with very clear drawings and quality photographs of objects and procedures, this book is essential for the library of every serious artist working with metal.

Don't be deceived.
By Mark A. Kingston
I'm in two minds about this book. So let's see.
It's been stated in another review that this book is not worth much. The reviewer said that at the end of the day one still has to pick up the tools and do the work. Never a truer word spoken! The reviewer also said that it is easier to troll the internet for information on how to actually do Chasing and Repousee'. This too is also very true today. One can find images quite readily. But surely in these times of mass information on the internet one could say that about alot of instructional books.
For me however, this having been the first book I purchased on the subject, I think that there is something to offer here. The artist in question in this book has worked on some large projects that are clearly works of art in a social setting. There are entrance door panels and signs and statuary here that I personally have not found elsewere. Also the artist has used or demonstrated that industrial tools like pneumatic air hammers can be used to great effect. There are some really good examples in this book. All the photographs are in Black and White which obviously would have been better in colour. There is reasonable instructional text to the photos. Subjects covered include Etching, Raising, Hard Soldering, Soft Soldering and the use of different support materials for the actual chasing.
I would say that it is not as good as Nancy Megan Corwin's book Chasing & Repouss but then what will be? One finds inspiration at the start from looking at what other people have done or attempted before. Sometimes one has to follow in anothers foot steps before one can cut their own path. This book opened my eyes to things that I had never contemplated before. Different to what I found in Nancy Corwin's book. It's not the definitive manual out there but it's still pretty good. Maybe it will do the same to you. To purchase one book only on a subject is to remain myopic in some sense. Yes the internet will help but so will Adolph Steines.
Would I buy it again? Yes I believe it was worth it!

Work on a grand scale
By wiredweird
I have other books on chasing and repousse. I have to admit, I find them far more detailed, much better for a slef-teacher to get started with. They have their limits, though, and one in particular: size. They're great for workpieces up to maybe half a meter across, if you really push things.

But, if you want to create a panel to cover an entire door, a major architectural frieze, a memorial plaque, or a wall hanging several meters across, you've just entered a whole new world. This gives valuable hints on working large: transferring the design using a projector, use of air-powered tools, supports, and more. I don't have plans for anything of such monumental magnitude, but some of the techniques can scale down to more aggressive kind of work at more approachable dimensions.

Although the unique material in this book gives it real value, the approach as a whole seems somewhat scattered. It touches on etching, raised work, engraving, and metal foils. It offers tips on soldering, plus a few font specimens for designs that include lettering. It leaves a general impression of "not much of an awful lot." So, if you want to shape metal panels on a large scale, you'll find some useful tips here. Otherwise, you might find other, more focussed references to be more useful.
