About the Author
Martin Ives, MBA, CPA, CGFM, CIA, serves as the Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Public Administration at New York University's Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. Before entering the academic world, Ives was Vice Chair and Director of Research of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board, a member of the Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board, First Deputy Comptroller of the City of New York, and Deputy Comptroller of the State of New York. In addition to this text, Professor Ives has co-authored three books (Program Control and Audit, Financial Condition Analysis and Management, and Government Performance Audit in Action). He has also written chapters for audit and municipal finance handbooks, has authored more than 25 articles for the Government Accountants Journal, the Journal of Accountancy, the Internal Auditor, and other professional journals. In addition, he has spoken to numerous professional and civic organizations. He was founding president of the Albany chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors and served on the governing boards of several other professional organizations. Ives has received many honors and awards including the Public Service Award (Fund for the City of New York), the Governor Charles Evans Hughes Award (Capitol District chapter of the American Society for Public Administration), and the S. Kenneth Howard Award (Association for Budgeting and Financial Management). He has also been voted Adjunct of the Year by the students at NYU's Wagner Graduate School. Joseph R. Razek, Ph.D., CPA (inactive), CGFM, is the Energy Accounting and Tax Conference Professor of Accounting at the University of New Orleans. A graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, he received his master's of business administration from the University of Michigan and his doctorate from the University of Illinois. He is a certified public accountant and a certified government financial manager and has consulted for many governmental and not-for-profit organizations. Dr. Razek has published articles in the Accounting Review, Government Accountants Journal, Accounting Historians Journal, Nonprofit World and other professional journals. He has also co-authored many chapters in governmental accounting handbooks, as well as a textbook on managerial accounting. Cited by his students as a dedicated and innovative teacher, Dr. Razek has received several teaching awards. He currently teaches courses in governmental and not-for-profit accounting and health care accounting at both the graduate and undergraduate level and is a member of the Louisiana Society of CPAs Health Care Task Force. Gordon A. Hosch, Ph.D., CPA, CGFM, received his bachelor's degree from the University of New Orleans, a master's degree from the University of Arkansas, and his doctorate in accounting from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He has served as chairman of the Department of Accountancy and is currently the KPMG Professor of Accounting and Graduate Programs Coordinator in Accounting at the University of New Orleans. He has public accounting experience with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. (now KPMG) and has served as a faculty intern with the Department of Agriculture's National Finance Center. Dr. Hosch is a member of the Louisiana Society of CPAs Governmental Accounting and Auditing Committee. He has made presentations to various organizations including the American Society of Women Accountants, the American Software Users Group, the U.S. Navy, and the Internal Revenue Service. He received the Educator of the Year Award from the Louisiana Society of CPAs as well as numerous teaching awards, including the University of New Orleans College of Business Outstanding Alumnus Award. WHat can I say except that it was a necessity. The way the book is laid out is logical and builds upon each chapter. You can easily reference something by looking at index or even the table of contents. Book was in great condition from seller.

Under Surveillance

Please don't judge this book by its cheesy cover. The people on the cover look nothing like what I imagined while reading this story.

Janey DeMarco is the youngest child, and only daughter, of former spies. Unlike her two older brothers who spent time in military, Janey has always worked as part of her family's PI Firm. She's what keeps the firm moving and working as the Office Manager and tech genius. When she meets new recruit Mal Laughlin she wants more than just an office friendship, but fears an office romance would end in disaster. Besides, how would she be able to sneak away with him without drawing the protective eyes and fists of her brothers? Mal is actually an NSA operative sent undercover to find a link between the DeMarcos and gun smugglers responsible for his partner's death. After a month acting like a nerd, he finds a link which points to Janey!

This was a great read! It was just what I was looking for at the time. I had just come off of reading several mediocre historical stories and needed a change. This provided it without all the clich�s.

I was a bit apprehensive about how the whole "discovery" of identities would play out in this story, but I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth it all went down. Things didn't get all blown out of proportion or roll out of control over exactly who Mal is. It was a nicely done and still so very believable.

I liked Janey and her family. Her parents are legendary spies who met on an assignment and married without anyone the wiser until years later when they decided that they would only work with each other or would walk. Her brothers are strong and very protective of their little sister, and I can't wait to read more about them. Janey was smart and strong and could hold her own. Her backstory about how she learned to break a man's nose was heartfelt and believable and added to her kiss-ass persona without making her over the top. Janey is surrounded by type-A personalities and manages them just fine.

So if I think this story is great, why am I only giving it 4 stars out of 5? The whole "I'm not who Janey thinks I am" thing from Mal got annoying. But what was grating was Mal's constant idiocy about the case with the smugglers. He was so blinded by revenge that he kept ignoring the obvious and couldn't see the truth that was right in front of him. And it just went on TOO long. Now, don't get me wrong--I don't hate Mal. I liked him quite nicely, in fact. He's capable, smart (well, mostly. Maybe I should say intelligent), hot, and fits in just perfectly with Janey's family.

I'm hoping Ms. Julian writes more about this amazing PI Firm. We already know that Janey's bestfriend and her brother have a sordid past and major sexual tension. Will we get to read about them? I haven't seen anything on her website, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

A great action packed romance

I loved this book!

It ticked all my boxes it had protective alpha males, strong independent females, great chemistry and great main story.

I hope there is more and this becomes a series because if it was this is a great beginning.

This book starts out so funny and sweet with the hero of the story, Mal, slowly going insane with lust while he listens to the object of his desire, Janey, move around the office. His inner dialogue...I just loved it, especially his inner-lectures from his dead father!! But while this style started off really cute, there was a point at about 35%-50% into the book, where I was tired of it and wanted the story to really start moving forward. That did finally happen and I fell in love with the book again. There was just that section in the middle of reading it where I got a little worn down by the repetitive emotions and seemingly never-ending sexual tension.

Overall this was a really fun read. Mal was a fabulous character although, at times, I had a hard time understanding his actions. In my defense, there were times when HE had a hard time understanding his actions too. I couldn't decide if the conflict was the way that he was written or if it was because he was working undercover and would let his real persona slide through. He is normally an undercover agent, but is working at the PI agency as a geeky computer guy with a shy persona. Unfortunately, it's hard for him to control his inner alpha when Janey is involved. Add to that, she throws him off-balance a lot of the time, and it's hard for him to stay in character...either of them and I honestly think that she brings out his inner-ditz sometimes too.

I would consider this book light romantic suspense. While there were elements of suspense and action, they fell within the realm of a really fun and entertaining contemporary romance. This story was definitely more character and romance driven than your typical romantic suspense. As such, it would be great for readers that are just dipping into the suspense genre or for romantic suspense fans who are just getting into general contemporary romance.

I really enjoyed the family dynamic of the DeMarco family. All of their stories were so well-developed. I love the fact that they all work in the family PI agency started by the parents, who just happen to be world-renowned spies with LOTS of influence in the political realm. I really hope that there are more books coming featuring this family. Janey has two gorgeous older brothers, Nic- who is the tough-guy agent of the family business, and Jimmy- who is the brains behind the inventions of the family business.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it!

Winning at Spiritual Warfare

This is a great book. Easy to read and allows you to understand and comprehend it because it is simple.

We think as Americans that we do not have spirits to fight against, you better think again, I have seen them, I have encountered them, I have fought against them. They think they can win, but you have to let them know that you know the end of the story, Jesus Christ has all authority and power in Heaven and in Earth.

IMOGEN ROBERTSON directed for TV, film, and radio before becoming a full-time author. She is the author several novels, including the Crowther and Westerman series. Maud Heighton is studying art in Paris but she is running out of money because Paris is so expensive especially during the Belle Epoque. One of her fellow students is found dead after committing suicide and this seems to Maud like an omen of what could happen to her unless she can find a way of earning money which doesn't interfere with her painting.

Another student - the glamorous Tanya - introduces her to someone who can find her a job and at first the proposed job seems like paradise. She is to keep Sylvie Morel company and teach her painting and sketching in the afternoons and she is to live in which means she is well fed in luxurious surroundings. But is everything exactly as it seems?

The book is well written in a very low key style which somehow draws the reader into the story and keeps them reading. I loved the descriptions of life in Paris with its contrasts between rich and poor, the beautiful architecture and the many eccentric artists. I liked the characters and thought the author really brought them to life. I found Maud to be a sympathetic character and I admired her grit and determination in an age when such qualities were not admired in women. This is an enjoyable reader for anyone who likes historical novels.

Imogen Robertson keeps getting better!

I'm a big fan of Ms. Robertson's Westerman and Crowther books, so I was curious to read this standalone novel. (Honestly, not enough people write standalone novels anymore.)

Maud Heighton is a young English woman who is studing painting at Lafond's Academie. Literally a starving artist, she is taken under the wing of a wealthy Russian classmate, Tanya, and one of the the classes' models, a Parisian called Yvette. Through them she eventually is introduced to Christian Morel and hired as a companion for his sister Sylvie. Sylvie has an opium habit, and needs someone to keep an eye on her while Christian is at his club. Well fed and content for the first time in many months, Maud develops a deep affection for Sylvie and begins to dream once again about her own future instead of her next meal.

Ms. Robertson creates wonderful characters. Maud is an artist, and it shows in her perspective in the first section of the book. The juxtaposition of color and texture are frequent elements of her descriptions and scene setting. Like Maud, I was lulled into complacency with her life with the Morels, and I was completely shocked when things changed. I also love the way Ms. Robertson uses history, incorporating events of the time period appropriately to her characters. It's not a research dump and the facts never feel shoe-horned in to the story, but you get the information the characters would have living through that time. (I'm specifically talking about the way the Siege of Paris and the Commune are touched on in the story.)

To say any more would cause spoilers. This book lacked the humor that leavens Robertson's mystery series; the second half is chillingly dark. If I had a complaint, it would be that Maud's idyl period lasted a bit too long, but the pacing worked perfectly to catch this reader off her guard right along with Maud. Anything from this author is highly recommended.

Not as interesting as I had expected it to be.

As I was reading this novel I kept being confused by what it seemed to be trying to be. Was it a mystery? Well then it really took a very long time for it to have any mysterious aspects at all and when it sort of did, it was an expected development because _something_ simply had to happen. There was also the fact that Maud Heighton appeared to be the main character and yet the book was taken over for me by Tanya Koltsova because she was so much more of an interesting character. This story relates the incidents which happened to Maud and Tanya during the winter of 1909-1910 in Paris. Both women are art students at the Academie Lafond, but there the similarities end. Maud is English, destitute, and starving because all her money goes toward the expenses of continuing her lessons. Tanya is Russian, very wealthy, and trying to assert her independence by dodging attempts by her family to have her marry a rich Russian man. For me Maud was bland almost to the point of fading into the background and I never understood why she felt her talent in painting would ever be sufficient to earn her a livelihood once she left Paris. She certainly never seemed to get any encouragement about her art except of the most understated kind from her friends.

I have thoroughly enjoyed all the previous novels I've read by Imogen Robertson. Moving away from her successful series to write this novel was obviously something she felt passionate about because it is plain to see that she feels passionate about the subject matter. This novel just wasn't as interesting to me as I had expected it to be. One of the aspects I did like were the descriptions of paintings which supposedly appeared in an exhibition catalog from 2010. Those were written so well that I could see the painting in my minds eye, all were attributed to anonymous artists but seemed to have been associated with incidents Maud was experiencing in the novel. Maybe they were supposed to indicate that even if her name as an artist didn't live on her art did.
