Paris, Capital of Modernity, by David Harvey

Collecting David Harvey's finest work on Paris during the second empire, Paris, Capital of Modernity offers brilliant insights ranging from the birth of consumerist spectacle on the Parisian boulevards, the creative visions of Balzac, Baudelaire and Zola, and the reactionary cultural politics of the bombastic Sacre Couer. The book is heavily illustrated and includes a number drawings, portraits and cartoons by Daumier, one of the greatest political caricaturists of the nineteenth century.

From Publishers Weekly
Drawing on essays written over the last 30 years, Harvey brings one of the most fascinating and confounding periods of French-or for that matter, European-history into sharp relief. He asserts that two conceptions of modernity were nurtured in Paris in the years after the First Empire-one bourgeois, and the other founded on the idea of the "social republic" geared toward benefiting all classes of citizens. Harvey traces these conflicting movements over the decades leading up to the Revolution of 1848 and charts their reverberations through the final days of the Paris Commune. The book is richly illustrated with over a hundred period photographs and cartoons by Daumier and others, which serve to reinforce the notion of Paris as a city of contrasts in a period of profound change. And Harvey is as comfortable and adept at quoting pertinent passages from the romantic novelists as he is offering detailed economic analyses of real estate and labor market dynamics. By making use of primary sources from diverse disciplines, he offers a thorough examination of the period: he explores, for instance, the role of women and class strictures and the consequences of urban planning and public transportation. The worst that can be said of this exhaustive investigation into the complicated and turbulent era of the Second Empire is that Harvey presupposes an intermediate knowledge of many of the important actors and events. As he weaves the humanities, philosophy, economics and sociology into a detailed tapestry, the author leaves remedial explanations of Parisian and French social movements to the authors listed in a well-annotated bibliography. This is not a problem in and of itself, but readers expecting a breezy history of the "City of Lights" may find themselves overwhelmed by the complexity and depth of this book.

Review
"'Harvey's work is notable for the sheer diversity of sources he draws on... A stunning book that will engage anyone with an interest in 19th century politics and urbanism... a definitive work on the historical geography of Paris which shows tremendous insight, forceful arguments, and above all, an obvious passion.' - Environment and Planning C: Government and Policy 'Harvey brings one of the most fascinating and confounding periods of French - or for that, European - history into sharp relief.' Publishers Weekly 'Much more than a simple narrative... [a] complex and sophisticated work.' - Library Journal 'David Harvey is perhaps the most important urban scholar writing in the English language, and here he is at his best.' - Thomas Bender, author of The Unfinished City: New York and the Metropolitan idea"

A cultural and geographical history of Second Empire Paris
By M. A. Krul
David Harvey, the famous social geographer, is not particularly known for his work on cultural matters, having spent most of his career working on issues of political economy, spatial organization and (some) philosophy of the same. Nonetheless, "Paris, Capital of Modernity" is a partially cultural, partially political-geographical history of the modernization of Paris undertaken under the famous leadership of Georges Haussmann (1809-1891), who created the monument, park and boulevard systems for which Paris is now justly renowned. As context, Harvey analyzes the works and attitudes of famous writers of that period in Paris, such as Flaubert and De Balzac, in addition to providing many nice photographs and maps charting the changes and developments in France's capital.

As one can expect with Harvey, most of the work is spent on tracing the geographical and spatial aspects of the modernization and industrialization of Paris and its political background in the persons of Napoleon III, Emperor of France between 1852 and 1870, and Georges Haussmann. He shows the constellation of class forces that allowed Napoleon III to play various classes against each other, shifting support from financial capital to landlord powers and back, and the position Haussmann's developments had in this political ensemble. Although the initial material is a little dry, things get better as Harvey digs into the meat of the matter, where Haussmann does not appear as much as the hated enemy of the workers and wrecker of ancient Paris as he is often depicted, but rather as an embodiment of the 'creative destruction' that capitalism is when it fully comes into its own, as it did in France around this time. The tensions and furies caused by the combination of capitalist industrialization on the one hand, and the spatial and economic restructuring of Paris as such by Haussmann and speculators both would finally erupt into the Paris Commune of 1871, which inaugurated the permanent end of the power of both reaction and a bloody repression of socialism in France.

The book is written with the usual subtlety, political understanding, and nuance of Harvey's best work. Whether the literary additions to the work are an improvement or a distraction perhaps depends on taste, all the more since the first chapter, entirely on De Balzac's oeuvre, is rather at variance with the topic of the rest of the work. But although the topic of Paris' furious ascent into modernity is not quite a new topic (addressed famously by Walter Benjamin, for example), Harvey's book is a worthy addition to Marx' own studies on the history of France: "The Eighteenth Brumaire of Napoleon Bonaparte" (The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte) and "The Civil War in France" (The Civil War in France: The Paris Commune).

Paris as archetype
By Bo K.
Implicitly taking his start from Benjamin's sketches of Paris as the "capitol" of the 19th century, Harvey analyses the elements that transformed Paris from medieval labrynth to modern bourgeois metropolis and the corresponding effect that this had on all levels of the class structure, men and women, and the spatial geography of the city itself. He starts with Balzac and Baudelaire, as all such studies must; but quickly moves out of literature and into history, looking at the changes in the city geography begun by Hausmann. Harvey uses his familiar metaphor of changes in geography as a symbol of the changes wrought by modernity. Excellent, pointed read for those interested in Paris and French history, urban development, and the effects of capital on capitols. Great bibliography too!

The Historic Capitalist Template for Urban Renewal
By Paul F Tioxon
David Harvey as a renowned scholar only adds to his contributions to understanding not only Paris and Modernity, but Urban Renewal as a creative phase of Capitalism, as it seeks out new spaces within preexisting cities to invest surplus capital, employ labor and grow the future capacity for capital flowing in and out of globally connected regions.

It is not only an intellectual grasp demonstrated here, but a grasp using multiple points of reference. The book is carefully designed to display political cartoons, illustrations, early photos and fine artwork to show the story he is trying to tell. Additionally, you will find an enlightening use of literature, novels, poetry, as well references from scholarly histories, and contemporary writings to tell the story of the remaking of Old Paris into the City Of Light, the grandest spectacle of urban beauty. A more recent example of this story would be Edmund Bacon's herculean reinvention of Philadelphia or Robert Moses reshaping NYC to ready it for the post industrial American Century. Baron Haussmann was the planner and driving force behind the renewal and expansion of Paris into a great global urban center, who carried out his renewal during what is referred to as the 2nd Empire period of France. He secured the political patronage of Napoleon III. For nearly 2 decades from 1853-1870 and continuing on well until after he was dismissed from his power, Paris became a construction site. Demolition of the old Medieval narrow streets and alleys and construction of new boulevards and grand monuments and public spaces became the hallmark of modern cities around the world.

This is a very nice book. It is very short, but has enough detail to get interested in real estate investing. This book is not end all-be all book for apt investing. Instead, it should open your eyes to reading more about investing. Importantly, this book should help convert your mindset. If a guy can come from a poor village in africa to buy an apartment, we all can. Thanks Mr. Ntongondu.

How to cast bronze?

This complete tutorial will show you a simple, safe and easy way to cast a small, fist size sculpture in bronze at little cost and little effort. The method described in this manual is called the thin ceramic shell, lost wax technique. This is the same technique implemented by modern art foundries; it has simply been adapted to make it possible in the backyard and is the easiest way for the home founder to make a small sculpture to a high degree of quality at little cost and with easily found tools and materials.

This manual focuses on a simple yet rewarding 5 days project that will allow the home enthusiast to cast a small piece safely, quickly, cheaply and to a high standard of quality. The manual will introduce you to the basics of wax working, sprueing a wax model, mixing and applying a ceramic slurry, making your own crucible and making an efficient yet affordable furnace, melting and pouring the metal and finally chasing and fettling the bronze before applying a simple patina.

The second part of the manual discusses more advanced casting techniques and gives further advice and guidance on how to set up a small scale home foundry. The tools and materials necessary are easy to find. An appendix lists many stores where specialised materials can be purchased in different countries.

About the Author
A New Zealander since 1987, French born Olivier Duhamel lives on Waiheke Island near Auckland, New Zealand with his wife Marie-France and their 3 children. He is a sculptor specialising in the female human form and makes delicately crafted small bronze figurines. Olivier Duhamel' s creations do not convey any particular message, do not attempt any conceptual or symbolist exploration, nor do they search to be innovative at all cost. They are rather trying to simply capture the beauty and sensuality of his subject of study. His bronze works are sold in art galleries across New Zealand and also in Australia, China, Canada, France and Belgium.

Great info on the process though make no mistake

Some typos, and I am finding the list of materials as named in the book are an awful pain to hunt. Make your own slurry or just buy it from a vendor as a slurry for less. Great info on the process though make no mistake.

For the occasional caster, art objects or small parts
By PTSideshow
I have to say that in addition to the content/subject of this book, the fact that it was a print on demand book from Amazon. Caused me to order it. This is the new direction that people are taking in getting their work out there with a minimum investment of money.

The quality of the book along with the color photo's is very good. Matter a fact it is better than I was expecting. Plus on the last page it is dated the day that it was printed. Which was interesting.

After watching his video on casting some small bronzes, on U tube, the conversion of and successful application of a minimal furnace kiln structure as they do in the pottery field.

And the fast easy home made low cost crucibles, along with some of the other aspects of his and his mentors techniques for the waxes models, the thin shell ceramic molds. The simplified, melting, casting, and other procedures.

Made it a must read book!

I can safely say that by following the information in this book, not only is it low cost, but puts the casting of parts for model engines, shop projects, art projects with in the reach of everybody young or old.

From the use of the weed burner torch as a heat source, the koawool (ceramic fiber blanket) furnace shell. To the heavy duty BBQ tongs, welding gloves, face shield.

It is one of the best books on the subject and will I'm sure to be come the foundation standard of small time casting in the future.

It covers every part of the process starting with the bronze casting itself. Tools, materials and equipment, moving on to a Project overview and then to Process overview.

By Steve Grossman
Greenbaum's book is a must "read and study" for anyone contemplating starting their own business. This hard-hitting, no nonsense guide strips away the mystique surrounding success. It clearly shows the most important criteria that MUST be met, and suggests creative ways to fill them. It has provided at least 12-15 new ideas that have super-charged me. JUST GET IT !!!

A ruthless criminal unleashes his most feral desires in the new Leopard novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Wild Cat.

Passion melts the will of an ice-cold criminal when he meets the one woman who can tame the beast inside him.

Leopard’s Fury

With her own bakery in San Antonio, Evangeline Tregre made a new life far from the brutal lair of shifters she was born into. Though she is all too aware of her leopard-shifter blood, she never felt the sensation of a wild animal stirring inside her. Not until Alonzo Massi walked into her bakery. The powerful shifter is as irresistible as he is terrifying, but his icy demeanor tells her to keep her distance.

Alonzo knows better than to let himself get involved with someone like Evangeline. She doesn’t deserve the type of danger that follows him, or the threat of his Amur leopard. But even with his lean muscle and iron will, Alonzo isn’t strong enough to stay away from the one woman who can make him feel at peace. And when their secret lives draw a mortal threat, Alonzo unleashes the feral passion he keeps pent up inside himself.

"Damn it, Evangeline, you need to come back home."

Evangeline Tregre shook her head and took a slow look around the bakery. It wasn't exactly thriving, but it was still afloat and becoming more popular every day. The walls were painted a soft blue. She'd done that herself. Every cupboard, every placement of the display cases, every single thing from the lettering to the floor-she'd done it. The dusty old, torn-up space had been renovated by her. It was now cozy and inviting with the tables and chairs. She loved the way the bakery smelled. Every single morning when she got up to bake, she looked forward to the day. Back "home" she detested her very existence.

"This is home, Robert. I love it here and I'm stayin'. It's more home to me than that place ever was." She kept her voice quiet. Low. She was used to being silent. She didn't argue, nor did she like arguments. She especially didn't like Robert Lenoux coming to her hard-won business and insisting she return. "In any case, I thought you were travelin', going to the Borneo rain forest."

She knew all about Robert, although she'd never actually met him until he'd walked into her bake shop. He had been sent away in disgrace, had served a brief jail stint, but got out of a real sentence from the law by turning evidence against his friends. Murderers. He'd participated in beating and robbing the elderly in their homes, in raping exotic dancers. He had committed countless crimes against his lair, and looking at him, she knew he didn't care about anyone but himself. Especially women.

"Fuck that," Robert spat. "I'm not goin' to be sent away from my home by some outsider who thinks he can order me around. The entire point of goin' to Borneo is to bring home a woman. You'll do just fine. I don' care that you aren' a shifter."

Her stomach lurched and then tied into knots. She took a deep calming breath. She'd left that world behind. She wasn't about to allow a bad-tempered, evil male leopard, one who no doubt didn't mind hitting a woman, into her life.

"The answer is no. I am never goin' back there."

"You have a duty to the rest of us." Robert reached out, settled hard fingers around her upper arm and yanked her close to him.

Alarm skittered down her spine. She took a step back but his fingers only tightened into an iron band. "Let go of me, Robert. Now." She hissed the word, letting him see she wouldn't stand for being pushed around by him. By anyone. Not ever again. "I want you to leave. This is my shop and I'm askin' you politely to leave."

The bell over the bakery door tinkled merrily, at odds with the tension in the room. Both turned their heads toward the sound. Evangeline's breath caught in her throat. She'd grown up around dangerous men. Criminals. Horrible, cunning, viciously cruel men. She knew criminals. She had a radar for them. No one needed radar to know without a single doubt that the man walking through the door of her bakery was dangerous. Terrifyingly so.

He glanced around her beautiful little shop and saw every single detail, yet he didn't see it because there could be no appreciation. None. There was no emotion on his face or in his flat, cold, dead eyes. Beautiful eyes. Gorgeous eyes. A shocking blue. Like the blue ice of a glacier. His lashes were long and as black as night, framing those icy blue eyes. But there was not a single hint of emotion, not even when his gaze settled on Robert's hand on her arm. Absolutely nothing. He walked. He breathed. He probably killed people. But if he did, he did it with absolutely no emotion. And he'd heard them arguing. She could tell by the way he looked at Robert's fingers wrapped around her.

He was very tall, ruggedly built, all roped muscle, and he looked absolutely invincible. She was used to men with muscle, but he was a fighter, through and through. The way he moved-the control, the containment, smooth, fluid, easy, as if he glided or flowed across the floor rather than walked. He did that in absolute silence too, as if his very expensive Italian leather shoes didn't actually touch the floor.

His suit looked as if it had cost as much as the renovations on the bakery space and been custom made for him-which it probably had been. His icy gaze remained on Robert's fingers digging into her bicep. She'd all but forgotten he was gripping her so hard until fear sent a chill arrowing through her.

Robert must have felt it too. He was leopard. A shifter. She knew from gossip he had a nasty temper and was as strong as an ox. Like most shifters, he didn't fear much. His leopard would shred an enemy in seconds if he were threatened. Still, he let her go and stepped back away from her. Away from the newcomer. Subtly putting her between them.

"Can I help you?" Evangeline asked. Her voice sounded different, even to her. Her accent was deeper, a soft sultry lure she hadn't meant to throw, but really? Every single cell in her body was aware of him. The bayou came out in her voice more than it ever had before, and it sounded like an invitation to spend the night floating down a lazy canal together under a starlit night.

She wasn't the type of woman to flirt with a man, let alone speak to him in a voice like that. She knew better. She knew danger when she saw it, but she came alive the moment he entered her bakery. Her body had been asleep but now it was wide awake and very aware of every inch of the Iceman. She'd already nicknamed him and thought of him as her Iceman, even if it was just in her fantasies.

His eyes focused on her. He looked at her through a blue glacier without once blinking. "Coffee. Black. A piece of your cinnamon cake."

His voice was deep. Dark. As cold as his eyes. As cold as Siberia-the dead of winter in Siberia. At the same time, it was low and sensual. She couldn't stop the little shiver that ran through her body at the sound of it. Heat pooled low and wicked, and something wild and feral deep inside her stirred. She had an unexpected urge to take all of that molten heat spreading through her and see if she could unthaw the Iceman's cold.

He spoke with a heavy Italian accent. For some reason that shocked her. She didn't expect Italian. More . . . Russian. Maybe because she associated him with Siberia. She couldn't get that out of her mind. To her, he would always be her Russian Iceman.

Evangeline nodded and turned away from his male potency. He was definitely out of her league. Out of her world. Her universe. This was not a man any sane person would want in their life. Her hands trembled as she poured the coffee-her special all-natural brew customers raved about. The pieces of the cinnamon cake were generous and she arranged one on one of the oblong-shaped plates with her fancy gold logo on it. The E for Evangeline running through the center of it.

He took it without a word. He simply nodded at her, those icy blue eyes never lighting up, never registering life in them at all. No emotion. No nothing. He certainly wasn't feeling the electrical attraction she was. He turned away and moved across the room. He pulled a chair around so that his back would be to the wall facing the plate-glass entry. He dragged a small table in front of him, put the coffee and the plate on the table and then went to the small stand where the napkins and silverware were.

Evangeline took a deep breath and let it out. She couldn't-wouldn't-stare at him. Robert stepped close again, leaning into her, so that his breath puffed into her ear, an intrusion that annoyed her. She'd been so aware of the Iceman that she'd all but forgotten Robert.

"We aren' finished, Evangeline. I'm takin' you back with me."

"I asked you to leave," she said equally as quiet. "And please don' come back."

Robert hissed at her, his eyes going sheer cat, his temper rising at her defiance. She stood her ground, her heart suddenly pounding. She didn't want to be afraid of him, but it was impossible with him standing so close, scowling fiercely at her. He was deliberately trying to intimidate her. She barely knew him, only what her friend Saria Boudreux-now Donovan-had told her about him, and none of it was good. Saria knew everyone, and Robert Lenoux was from one of the seven shifter families leasing thousands of acres in the swamp.

Robert stepped even closer, deliberately towering over her smaller figure. Once again his fingers bit into her arm, this time hard enough to leave bruises. There was the softest of rustlings and they both turned to see the Iceman standing a few feet from them, one great big fist encased in a very expensive leather glove, shoving a napkin into the trash can. His eyes were on Robert's face and they were colder than ever. The blue in them appeared to be glowing, a flame beneath all that ice.

Evangeline's breath caught in her lungs and everything in her stilled. He was leopard. A shifter. It seemed impossible there in San Antonio, a place far from where she grew up. Shifters were rare and to find one in a city . . . Impossible, but there was no mistaking those eyes. Exotic. Terrifying. Totally focused on Robert.

"Let. Her. Go." Each word was soft. Spoken in a low tone. Ice dripped from the voice. The Iceman didn't look at Evangeline, his entire focus on the man hurting her.

Robert couldn't fail to see those eyes, read death in them and know what the Iceman was. He hissed a curse word, let go of Evangeline, turned and stormed out, slamming the door. The Iceman turned back toward his table.

"Thank you," Evangeline said softly. Meaning it. She'd left all that behind her and she never wanted to go back. It didn't matter that this man clearly was a criminal. Or far more dangerous than Robert could ever be. Or that Robert ran like a rabbit from him when his leopard had to have been raking and clawing for a fight. He'd stepped in when he didn't have to, and she was grateful. He deserved to know it.

The Iceman turned slightly, looking at her over one broad shoulder. His glacier-blue eyes swept over her and then he nodded slightly before turning away.

Evangeline let out her breath slowly and turned back to straightening the baked goods in the case. She got up at three A.M. every morning and baked the day's goods so they were fresh. She couldn't afford to hire anyone else to work in her shop, so she did it all. The baking, the coffee, the dishes, the cleaning of the shop, all of it, and she took pride in her work. She was getting by, managing to pay the bills each month, and that meant she could keep her independence. She was determined to make it on her own.

She snuck another quick look at her Iceman. He wasn't paying her the slightest bit of attention. Not. At. All. She knew she was easy on the eyes. Since coming to San Antonio, men had flirted outrageously with her. She had no idea what to do with their attention, nor did she want it, but she'd come to realize all the things Saria had tried to convince her about her looks might actually be true.

She wasn't quite five foot four, so she didn't have those long legs that attracted men, but she had generous curves and a small waist to emphasize them. Her hair was long and very dark, her eyes a true green, like emeralds, a startling color surrounded by long, thick, black lashes. She had great skin, a luscious mouth and a small, straight nose. All in all, she wasn't hard to look at. But he wasn't looking.

Fortunately, so she didn't make a complete fool of herself, customers began to trickle in. She knew when he got up and left that he didn't look back.

Over the next week, her Iceman came in three more times. He tried something different each time by pointing or jerking his chin, not speaking. She noticed he preferred things with cinnamon and he liked apples. He always took his coffee black and all three times he indicated he wanted a refill. Each time he came in he rearranged her tables so he could sit with his back against the wall. After the third time, she moved the table herself and left it there permanently for him. He didn't acknowledge that she'd done it, and in a way she was glad. She needed the business, but she didn't want a relationship with him.

She'd thought with time he would become less scary, less intimidating, but she was wrong. He was more so. An aura of danger clung to him like a second skin. He never laughed. He never smiled. He barely acknowledged her, yet he was aware of everything, every movement, in her shop and on the street. She was certain he was armed to the teeth and sometimes she was afraid the few cops who frequented her shop would come in at the same time and there would be a shoot-out or something equally as awful.

Two months passed and he came in three times a week, sometimes four, but he never spoke beyond placing his order. She found herself watching for him. Smiling at him when he came in. He never smiled back, but he did stay longer. At least a half an hour longer than he had before.

A few others dressed in Italian suits came in over the third month, never at the same time as her Iceman, but she knew he'd sent them her way. Business seemed to pick up even more after that, as if seeing people in her shop brought in even more customers. That meant she had to work harder, baking more goods, but she didn't mind; she was finally making it.

She'd all but forgotten Robert. He was waiting for her to open on a Thursday morning, a day her Iceman rarely came in. That told her Robert had been watching the store, probably looking for a pattern. Her heart stuttered when she saw him come through the door. He casually reached over and turned her sign from open to closed.

CF FANS WON'T REGRET READING THIS GREAT ACTION PACKED LOVE STORY!!
By Edwina "I Love books"
WOW!! I want to say to all the Christine Feehan fans who have been disappointed with some of her past stories that she listen to her fans and she is back to being the excellent storyteller we all knew she was. Leopard's Prey is about the story. Sometimes I felt like I was reading the Godfather, but with a new uptake on it with Leopards!!

Leopard's Fury is not sex sex sex this is action packed fierce Leopards and them protecting there mates. I fell in love with the heroine Evangeline Trege which we met a few books back in the series and her Fierce Leopard Mate Alonzo Massi "aka" Fyodor Amurov. I am almost speechless at how great this couple is. OMG Evangeline has a fierce alpha female Leopard Bebe.

Lots of Kick Ass action and ask question later to all of Alonzo's enemies. We get to spend a lot of time with all the previous lead characters from the other Leopard People series. It almost felt like a reunion of all the characters. Emma's baby is born. There is a bit of repetitive sentences, but not many. It won't bother you. When we do get to the sex about 63% into the story its pure sensual sexy hot sex!! Leopards Fury is about the story, the action and the falling in love of a couple and less about the sex!!

As a very long time Fan of Christine Feehan I can't express how much I loved this story and I am so excited that CF is back to writing in her former style but has bought her stories into the world of today!!

I Highly Recommend Leopard's Fury!! You won't regret reading it.

Enough with the criminals
By Good2Go
Another book I pre-ordered.

Maybe I have to stop reading Christine Feehan. *whimper*

Basically, this story is, "You are mine. You are mine. You are mine. I'm a dangerous criminal. You are mine."

What's with all the heroes being criminals???? Do you really want to date a criminal???

I couldn't help my mind playing out the image of the hero ending up in jail, and the heroine having to raise a child on her own in an environment where everyone wants to kill her.

So--deep breath--I put down this book at least three times, rolling my eyes so hard, I think I fell asleep. Seriously. It's pages and pages of, "You're mine. Mine to keep. We're a done deal. You belong with me. I own you. You're not going anywhere. I keep what's mine. I own you body and soul. You're mine, you're mine, you're mine."

Although this book had potential at the start, it quickly died with the premise of a criminal with possessive tendencies. I feared she'd wake up and have him choking her because she said a different guy's name in her sleep. He was a maniac. She loved it. Why? Not sure. Which just about sums up my feelings for this book. I hate to say that the criminal element in this author's novels is wearing so thin, it's transparent, but hey, anything else would be a lie.

Leopards
By Barbbe
I love her books I can't wait from them to come out and then I get upset because I read them too fast. This one was a little different never had a mafia boss as bossy as this one basically. Evangeline has her own bakery when she meets the bad boy alpha leopard. He knows he should stay away because he is bad. His life doesn't need to touch her life but he can't help himself he has to have her to calm his beast. Love this book was a little different like I said before I still liked it. Had some of the characters from other books which I always enjoy hearing that side of the books again. Now just waiting for another book.

How to Think Theologically, by Howard W. Stone, James O. Duke

For over fifteen years, How to Think Theologically has served as the ideal primer on the work of theology for students at all levels of study. Stone and Duke contend that theology is not an optional, esoteric discipline, but one that every Christian person is called to do, and thus they welcome everyone to the essential, vibrant work of making religious sense of concrete life situations.

The third edition of this popular book retains all of the lucid and lively text that marked the previous editions. On this already strong foundation, case studies and bibliographies are updated, and several helpful pedagogical elements are added.

Great book but Kindle version has issues
By Conda W Lashley
The content of the book is well worth reading. However, there are several problems with the way it is formatted for the Kindle. First, some words get dropped at the end of a page where there is also a sidebar. Second, at least two sections display out of sequence. You are reading along when a paragraph stops in the middle of a sentence. Several pages later, the paragraph continues. Third, the book is formatted to only show location, not page number. Finally, the book is formatted to only allow the capture of a relatively small fraction of highlights in the My Clippings file. I highly recommend reading the book and I generally prefer reading on the Kindle but I would suggest buying this book in a physical rather than an electronic version.

For Those Who Don't Already Think Theologically, But Not for Those Who Do
By neal
Before reviewing the content I should note that I read this on the Kindle version. As other reviewers have mentioned, the Kindle version has a few errors. There were several pages that ended mid-sentence and repeated paragraphs from several pages earlier--I'm not referring to "big ideas" that are emphasized in larger text boxes. There were a few instances when the cut-off material never surfaced. Thankfully, though, none of these instances were communicating anything significant.

Content review is below.

Howard W. Stone and James O. Duke offer readers an introductory method for thinking theologically. As they introduce the method they clarify that this is not a systematic theology; rather, it is a process by which Christians can reflect upon their understanding of what it means to be Christian in thought and practice. “Faith seeking understanding” is the primary theme of How to Think Theologically, meaning, “that as theologians we seek to understand what we believe about the Christian message of God” (pp. 1, 9). This understanding applies to individuals and communities of faith.

Stone and Duke propose two foundational reference points for thinking theologically. The first reference, “embedded theology,” involves concepts about God and the world that individuals subliminally accept based on their experiences in and around the Church (p.15). The second reference point is “deliberative theology,” and as its name implies, is the realm in which analytical thinking occurs (p. 17). The authors note a co-dependent relationship between these two concepts, but do not satisfactorily account for varying depths within a believer’s theology. They argue that both types of theology are on a spectrum, but in doing so they leave readers wondering why “embedded theology” is discussed as distinct from “deliberative theology.” All “embedded theology” has—by necessity—undergone some level of deliberation. For, as the authors note, when a person identifies himself as a Christian, he has already begun the process of “faith seeking understanding.” Therefore, all “embedded theology” is “deliberative theology.” Instead of confusing readers with an extended discussion of embedded and deliberative terminology, the authors should have noted the importance of “faith seeking understanding” and moved more quickly into teaching their process of analysis and construction.

This process contains three steps. First, the individual gathers the information available within a given situation, noting the presented arguments, as well as the underlying predispositions of all parties involved. Next, he evaluates how faithfully each position embodies the Christian gospel. Finally, the theologian finds a creative way to communicate the most accurate and adequate exposition of Christianity for the scenario. The final chapters of the book help readers practice this process by moving them through generic case studies and providing them with diagnostic questions for self-evaluation. After thinking through these exercises readers should have a grasp of this method of theological reflection.

For Christians who either have never considered themselves worthy or never intentionally thought about the theological thinking process, How to Think Theologically provides a brief primer for theological reflection. This book offers questions for reflection at the end of each chapter, increasingly drawing readers to become more conscientious about how and why they understand their beliefs. After analyzing various scenarios, one cannot walk away without contemplating how faithfully he or she represents the Christian message of God.

Crafting an understanding from faith
By John Warner
A surprisingly readable approach to a complex subject. The text builds layer upon layer as it lays out a craftsman like approach to theology that is nonjudgmental in its direction but still requires testing and challenging innovation in community before advancing the next layer. Each practitioner will develop a unique, made by heart, vision of their place relative to God but nested securely in the greater Church.

The Tutankhamun Prophecies: The Sacred Secret of the Maya, Egyptians, and Freemasons, by Maurice Cotterell

Reveals the common origins of the ancient Egyptian and Mayan civilizations.

• Shows how these cultures had the ability to gaze into the heavens to predict the future unfolding of humanity and their place within the cosmic order.

• The author's revelations about the Freemasons' connection to this ancient knowledge generated a firestorm of controversy in Europe.

• By the author of the bestseller The Mayan Prophecies.

Maurice Cotterell's background as a scientist, mathematician, and engineer helped him to decipher the code of the ancient Maya, revealing the mystery of their science and religion to an extent never before possible. Using the same techniques, the author turns his attention here to deciphering the secrets encoded within the tomb of Tutankhamun. His extensive research revealed that both the ancient Egyptians and the Maya possessed a sophisticated understanding of sun spot activity and other astronomical phenomena--facts recently confirmed by modern science. Knowledge of the connections between solar patterns and human destiny allowed the Egyptians and Maya to harness the energy generated by the sun to achieve spiritual enlightenment and soul growth.

The link between reincarnation and solar energy encoded in the tombs of Tutankhamun and the Mayan Lord Pacal is a jealously guarded secret held by a select number of occult groups, including the higher orders of Freemasonry. The author unleashed a firestorm of controversy in Europe when he exposed much of the esoteric knowledge of the Freemasons, including one of the society's most carefully concealed secrets: incarnate gods like Lord Pacal and Tutankhamun have come to earth to help humans achieve spiritual enlightenment, soul growth, and individual realization as solar beings.

Blatant errors cause me to question his hypothesis.
By Edward Hanson
Tedious reading, with several blatant errors in the narrative that seriously compromise the story.
First, he blames Tutankhamen's deformities on a genetic disease, without even considering that it was the outcome of serial generational inbreeding. The royal lines of Egypt practiced inbreeding as part of their lineage: Pharaohs married their half-sisters, because the 'gods did it'. But humans aren't gods. The author also refers to alabaster as a hard stone to work. This is nonsense. Alabaster is a form of gypsum, one of the softest minerals in existence. It is easily carved. He also displays incredible ignorance of the Rosicrucian Order, declaring wrong information which is easily checked. If he can't get this material right, I have to question the rest of his hypothesis.

Brilliant Code Breaking
By Maleko
I may not agree with everything that Maurice Cotterell says, but because of his painstaking research, the way he cracked the code of the Maya was Brilliant!

No one before him was ever able to see the Amazing Hidden Images in The Lid of Palenque. Not even Erich von Däniken, who claimed it was a spaceship, could see what was really there. Maurice deserves accolades for his hard work.

Anyone visiting YouTube will find plenty of videos on Maurice Cotterell that will inspire you to want to buy this book.

And the Color Plates are Beautiful.

Ancient Knowledge of the Sun
By Janet Barlow
It is amazing to see what the ancient people knew about the sun and solar cycles and how they have an effect on us. It was important knowledge for them and is for us in modern times. Maurice Cotterell has unlocked the mysteries of the ancients and is more than willing to share the knowledge. I have read several of his books and this is one of my favorites.
