Good story. Poor translation?

I somewhat enjoyed Dying Light - Nightmare Row because I LOVE the game on which it is based. The story itself was fine--that would be the part I enjoyed, despite the heavy-handed foreshadowing. What put the damper on it for me was the... editing, I guess? I thought the book was written by someone for whom English was NOT their first language. I was shocked to find it was an American author who's been writing for decades.
Let's see... Dying Light - Nightmare Row was originally written by an American author in what I assume was English, but published first in Polish (translated by a third-party, I again assume) in January 2015. They've just released the English version a little over a year later, and it's as if they had a Polish person translate it back into English instead of using the original manuscript.
My problems with it:
1) They used WAY too many commas, and so a lot of them are poorly placed. While it's not as bad as using no commas at all, it had the effect of jarring me out of the story constantly, and I had to re-read some sentences to make sense of them.
2) Blatantly incorrect words that should have been caught in editing. Things like using "wretched" when they meant "retched", and "pleased" rather than "pleaded".
3) It seems as if the author doesn't know the difference between "stallion" and "mare", that those words cannot be used interchangeably, and that they actually require gender-matching pronouns.
4) The author has a habit of suddenly switching from using the protagonist's name, or pronouns like "she" or "her", to just calling her "the athlete". Again, this technique had a jarring effect, and was used so many times as to become tedious.
I cannot recommend this short novel to anyone unless they are fan of the Dying Light video game, and even then ONLY if it's on sale. For the prices charged for the paperback and Kindle versions, they should have done a better editing job. If I was the author, I'd be embarrassed about how this book represented my writing skills. He's even written some other video game tie-in novels that I was previously interested in, but now? I don't know.

More Dying Light? Oh Yisss...

I read fairly fast, but even for my standards I chewed through the book real quick. So let's take a look at what I liked and what I didn't like.
More depth! Harran got more character, more local character at that. The cultural heritage stands out a little better, though I admit even the book didn't delve quite as deep as I might have hoped. Still. It was great to get to know more about the City state of Harran, its politics, and just what went wrong. I also really liked how it focused on the time just before the outbreak and then right after it, giving us that sense of just how quickly things deteriorated. We also learn more about the virus in it, in particular what it does to people, though we do not get to see a lot of special mutations. Which, I suppose, would make sense. Considering mutations take time.
What I did't like so much? Hm. Let's see.
I admit I was able to connect better with Dr. Abbas, rather than the actual protagonist Mel, but that might be because of the word count restriction of a 200 page novella. Mel could have used a little more time to grow. In fact, I think the whole novel would have benefited greatly from not having been condensed the way it was. There was an obvious attempt at highlighting the darkness of human nature, for one. That was what I was looking for. The horror. The bleakness. But it didn't quite come across, and again I blame the word count restriction. Rather than getting right down to the nitty gritty, things were merely brushed at.
In closing, overall, I'd say its a nice, quick read, and if you like other video game tie in novels (which all follow a fairly simple formula) then I think you would enjoy this one. It's not the Halo novel series, more like Resident Evil, but with less horror. More depth would have definitely benefited the novel. And maybe it could have used another edit. Since English isn't my first language either I am not judging it by that though. I thought the writing was very publish-able.

I got the kindle edition of this book and really enjoyed it. Zombie apocalypse books tend to run very similar, and that's a problem they all suffer from. However, I really liked the setting description, and the character development at the end! That was well done imo. One thing I have to really point out is that I never even knew there was a game of the same name. After I was done reading it, I watched a few YouTube walkthrough videos of the game, and I felt like it was exactly as I had already read. The scenery and plot and story were dead nuts on target to the game. Anyone who likes the game should really like the book.
Well worth the buy and read!
