An excellent resource for learning Cinema 4D

In this post I'd like to put forward my review of Packt Publishing Cinema 4D R14 Cookbook, Second Edition by Simon Russell and Michael Szabo.

I've been using Cinema 4D now for, oh, around 11 years now, and I've gone through several Cinema 4D how-to books, the manuals, and many tutorials online, paid and free. It seems as if I can never get enough of learning the depths of Cinema 4D. I do enjoy it so much.

So I was very pleased with learning more of my favorite 3D software with Cinema 4D R14 Cookbook.

I'm a slow reader, so it did take me some good amount of time to go through this, and there's some good depth in this great resource for Cinema 4D.

Firstly, I think it's very easy to read and understand and helps the beginner to get up to quick speed in learning a hearty tool like Cinema 4D.

Secondly, I'm a visual person, and I really love how the authors incorporated great visuals in the form of screenshots and icons to help the student, beginner, intermediate or advance to navigate each section. The visuals, for me help move a person along very well.

There's even some humor thrown in here and there, because every VFX artist knows that manuals can be quite boring and dry. The authors did a great job to not let this be a dry read.

I've even learned things from the Fundamentals section, even though I consider myself in the upper intermediate level to lower advanced levels.

I really enjoy modeling in 3D so I thoroughly enjoyed the "Super Modeling" section. That was a lot of help for me, and I consider myself a pretty good 3D modeler. I learned new tricks and shortcuts, which is always useful.

The layout of this book is perhaps the best I've seen. There's no confusion with the section headings and each sub point. Such as "Getting Ready" which describes on gathering a scene file and where it's located, and then the section "How to do it" which describes step by step processes of creation within Cinema 4D.

I'm very new to the sculpting feature within Cinema 4D so I'm really just eating up every bit of information within the section, "Getting to grips with Sculpting."

I loved how the authors taught about deformers in Chapter 3. They show a picture of a rolled blueprint and I thought, "That is so cool" because I had done an animation a number of years ago that looked very near like this scene and I modeled and animated it just as was being taught in that section. So, well done!

Cameras are more of a weaker point to my use in Cinema 4D, I admit. I'm more into modeling and animation and letting an object move past the camera, but animating the camera hasn't been a focus of mine, admittedly. I was very pleased and learned things I really needed to know regarding animating a camera within Cinema 4D.

I've never dealt with 3D vision in rendering...yet. So I was pleased that they talk about that in this book. I really want to learn to do that as well.

Lighting an object or scene is a pretty complex ordeal and a lot of things can go wrong. The authors did a fantastic job of walking a student through the essentials and the complexity of lighting and rendering within Cinema 4D.

What pleases me about this book is that a lot of techniques that I had to learn on my own without really any help, just me figuring things out - I'm seeing in this book. That's not a bad thing at all, I'm certainly learning new techniques. It's just that it is comforting to see that I'm on the right track in my own development with using such powerful software.

The section that seems very daunting to me is Xpresso. I'm not much of a programmer so this is one area that I have usually avoided, but not with this book. This is a section that I'm re-reading over again to really get my head around the powerful tools of Xpresso and also MoGraph.

Cinema 4D R14 Cookbook: Second Edition may seem simple at first, but it goes into great depth into Cinema 4D's powerful programming to teach students how to really produce quality models and animations. It's written in a very intuitive tone, with many visuals to guide a person along smoothly.

This is one book that I'd definitely recommend!

A professional approach to Cinema 4D

This review is for the 2nd edition Cinema 4D R14 Cookbook

I've been a design professional for several years now, and was completely self taught by books such as this. This book stands out to me however, as a great in depth resource for users of all knowledge levels. I spent hundreds of hours scouring the web for tutorials and found myself weeding out good resources from bad. There are many amatuers out there that may not have as professional an approach as is demanded from the industry. I can confidently recommend this book as a professional approach to learning Cinema 4D. This is a well developed learning resource that teaches you not only how to create specific things, but the theory behind the work. Online tutorials are all about how to create something step by step, and if you follow their exact instructions step by step, you will get a result exactly like the tutorial. This book takes this above and beyond by leading you to think creatively, opening the door to the endless creative possibilities and the vast power that Cinema 4D offers it's users.

Could not download the examples

Got this one through my kindle but i do not feel comfortable to continue reading because I cannot find the exercises for the initial chapters for download in the packpub website (although the exercises for the more advanced chapters are there)
I contacted PackPub's technical support and they told me they handed my problem to the publisher.
I never heard from them since. (This was about a month ago)

Interesting.

The book arrived on time, I like that it is a binder book as that allows me to pull out the pages and walk around just with the pages that I need. It arrived on time. The read was neither here nor there for me. I read it for a class and although I did well on that class, the book was not a fluid as I would have liked it to be.

I got this for class. It's a pretty easy read and it gets the point across. Word of advice: That access code drives the price up. A lot. If you're getting this for a college class, make sure you REALLY need it, ask your professor. It was listed as "required" on my book list. but the professor told us we didn't need it.

About the Author
Sig Lonegren has been a student of sacred enclosures since the late 1960s and he has a Masters degree in Sacred Space, the study of pre-Protestant Reformation spiritual centers. He is the author of the "Earth Mysteries Handbook: Wholistic Non-intrusive Data Gathering Techniques, " in which he discusses sacred geometry, archaeoastronomy and dowsing, and "Spiritual Dowsing, " a book that explores dowsing both as a tool for locating earth energies found at ancient sacred sites, and for health and healing. Sig is a past Trustee of the American Society of Dowsers, and was head of their Dowsing School for several years. While his home is in Vermont, USA, he spends time each year in the heart of King Arthur's Avalon, at Glastonbury, England. For the past four years Sig has been contributing to Earth Mystery gatherings with people in Britain. These week long encampments, put together by a group called OakDragon, focus on specific topics like music and dance, astrology, healing, creativity, ceremony, and the study of the experience of ancient Britain.

About the Author

Joseph A. Tainter is Professor of Sustainability in the Department of Environment and Society, Utah State University, having previously served as Department Head. He received his Ph.D. in Anthropology from Northwestern University in 1975. Dr. Tainter worked on issues of sustainability before the term became common, including his highly-acclaimed book The Collapse of Complex Societies (Cambridge University Press, 1988). He is co-editor of The Way the Wind Blows: Climate, History, and Human Action (Columbia University Press, 2000), a work exploring past human responses to climate change. With T. F. H. Allen and Thomas Hoekstra he wrote Supply-Side Sustainability (Columbia University Press, 2003), the first comprehensive approach to sustainability to integrate ecological and social science. Dr. Tainter has taught at the University of New Mexico and Arizona State University. Until 2005 he directed the Cultural Heritage Research Project in Rocky Mountain Research Station. Dr. Tainter’s sustainability research has been used in more than 40 countries, and in many scientific and applied fields. Among other institutions, his work has been consulted in the United Nations Environment Programme, UNESCO, the World Bank, the Rand Corporation, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics, the Earth Policy Institute, and the Technology Transfer Institute/Vanguard. Dr. Tainter has been invited to present his research at the Getty Research Center, the University of Paris (Panthéon-Sorbonne), the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and many other venues. His research has been applied in numerous fields, including economic development, energy, environmental conservation, health care, information technology, urban studies, and the challenges of security in response to terrorism. Tad Patzek is the Lois K. and Richard D. Folger Leadership Professor and Chairman of the Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering Department at The University of Texas at Austin. He also holds the Cockrell Regents Chair #11. Between 1990 and 2008, he was a Professor of Geoengineering at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to joining Berkeley, he was a researcher at Shell Development, a unique research company managed for 20 years by M. King Hubbert of the Hubbert peaks. Patzek’s current research involves mathematical and numerical modeling of earth systems with emphasis on fluid flow in the subsurface soils and rocks. He works on the thermodynamics and ecology of human survival, especially on the global food and energy supply systems. More recently, Patzek has engaged in the studies of complex systems, focusing on the ultra deepwater offshore operations. He briefed Congress on the BP Deepwater Horizon well disaster in the Gulf, and was a frequent guest on NPR, ABC, BBC, CNN, and CBS programs. For the last two years, Patzek’s research has emphasized the use of unconventional natural gas as a fuel bridge to the possible new energy supply schemes for the U.S. He appeared in the Haynesville Shale documentary. Currently, Patzek teaches courses in petroleum engineering, hydrology, ecology and energy supply, computer science, and mathematical modeling of earth systems. Patzek is a coauthor of over 200 papers and reports, and is writing five books. In March 2011, he was chosen by US Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to serve on the Ocean Energy Safety Advisory Committee, a permanent advisory body providing critical guidance on improving offshore drilling safety, well containment, and spill response offshore.

The Risks and Rewards of More and More . . .

Simply put, this is a book a deep significance. I came across it shortly after it came out, as I was doing research for my own book, "Just a Little Bit More" (Blue Ocotillo/ACTA, 2014), that deals with excess and over-consumption. Scholars Joseph Tainter (anthropologist, Utah State University) and Tad Patzek (engineer, University of Texas-Austin) detail the Deepwater Horizon tragedy by way of backdrop for the rest of their story: whether or not "we can plan on a future that requires still more oil" (p. 5). Before shucking this book aside as the fracking boom would seem to nullify concerns about the future of oil in America, know that the authors approach this important subject with scholarship, experience, and a (politically) non-partisan demeanor.
I was introduced to two crucial concepts by reading this book: EROEI (energy returned on energy invested) and the energy-complexity spiral. The first concept is self-explanatory; the authors tell how back in the early days of oil discovery the EROEI quotient was around 100:1. Today - as evidenced by the doomed Deepwater Horizon platform which cost more than $1 billion to produce - EROEI for oil worldwide is about 18:1. Tainter and Patzek claim a complex modern society (such as ours) needs at least a 5:1 net energy ratio to succeed. Tellingly, some of the politically charged tar sands from Canada will be processed with an EROEI as low as 3:2 . . .
The energy-complexity spiral concept is, once grasped, fascinating and obvious. Remember the hand crank window on your older model car a few years ago? It got to be balky as the car aged, but getting it fixed when it eventually broke didn't cost you and arm and a leg. And, you could fix it yourself if you were so inclined. Nowadays, the motorized window on your newer car is convenient and easy to use, but it will cost you at least $700 to fix, and that includes taking it in to an experienced mechanic to get the job done right. Tainter and Patzek tell us that as society advances (motorized windows over manual), more and more energy is required. There is no going back on the current trajectory. Smart phones are an incredible advance over the flip phones of a decade ago, but they require much more energy to produce and operate. Is this trajectory sustainable? More and more is required, and the risks and rewards confront not only us but also those who follow after us.
These comments only scratch the surface of this important book. I can't recommend it enough for those who are concerned about society's current and future paths.

A Very Important Book!

This is a very important book that ought to be read by everyone who is concerned with the future of industrial civilization. The links between energy and consumption, and energy and environment, are widely appreciated, but are only part of the story. A more general picture emerges when environment is broadened to ecology, as done by William Catton, Jr. in his under-appreciated book, Overshoot: The Ecological Basis of Revolutionary Change (University of Illinois Press, 1982). An even more general picture emerges when one incoporates the link between energy and complexity, as done Joseph Tainter in his classic book, The Collapse of Complex Societies, Cambridge University Press, 1988.

Drilling Down, by Joseph Tainter and Tadeusz Patzek, is in part a reiteration of ideas contained in Tainters earlier book. However, the ideas are expressed more compactly and benefit from more than two decades of additional refinement. This aspect of the book can be thought of as 'Tainter Lite'. The book also provides a detailed description of the Deepwater Horizon environmental disaster, with much technical detail provided. This illuminates the complexity of modern energy extraction systems. It also provides a real-world context and case study for the presentation of Tainter's framework of an energy-complexity spiral that governs, and probably dooms, industrial civilization. The overall approach certainly got my attention. I consider this book to be a must-read (along with Catton's book) for anyone who is ready to venture beyond the happy talk of 'sustainable development'.

The execution of the book is less polished than it could be. The very obvious grafting of two authors' separate contributions may be inevitable. The production seems more like that of a high quality self-published book than a Springer imprint; and the font that is used for the number '1' makes some numbers look like the names of freeways and is a general distraction. However, in the big picture these are minor points that do not cause the loss of a star.

Drilling Down: Fascinating content, needs editing

With hesitation, I deliver this review of trivialities in the periphery of the important message of the book.

I'm only part way into the book, so I cannot comment fully on the content. So far it's a fascinating read, and it promises more of the same. My admittedly premature review is mostly about the editing in a book at this price bracket. All chapters have a duplicate abstract, not a summary, text portion at the start plus work addresses of the authors before the abstracts. The footnote links work, but the destination text needs to be panned to be fully readable on a small screen Kindle. I do not know if these are required in a scientific work, but they are distracting.

In chapter 3, at around the 12% mark, a full list of derived energy units is missing, only the bullit points are there.

About the Author
Marilyn Trail, MOT, OTR is the Co-Associate Director of Education for the Parkinson’s Disease Research, Education and Clinical Center (PADRECC) at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center and an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from the University of Oklahoma and her Master of Occupational Therapy degree from Texas Woman’s University. Ms. Trail has years of experience mentoring graduate students in treatment of patients with Parkinson’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in the clinical setting. She is Chair of the Houston PADRECC Education Committee which sponsors yearly regionally recognized continuing educational conferences on Parkinson’s disease and related movement disorders for allied health professionals and VA/community health fairs for patients with Parkinson’s disease, editor of the National VA Parkinson’s Disease Consortium/National PADRECC newsletter for movement disorder specialists, editor of the Houston PADRECC newsletter for Parkinson’s disease patients and their families, a reviewer for peer-reviewed scientific journals, and a consultant and contributor to Practical Pointers for Patients wit Parkinson’s Disease, a patient/family resource guide published by the National Parkinson Foundation. Ms. Trail’s research interests concern quality of life and activity in Parkinson’s disease patients, and she is the principle investigator on several projects related to these issues. She has published numerous papers and abstracts in professional journals such as the Journal of Neurological Sciences, Journal of Palliative Medicine, Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Movement Disorders, and Annuals of Neurology. She was the recipient of the Lita Wallace Readers Digest Foundation Grant and the principal investigator for The Methodist Hospital Foundation Grant. For many years she worked as a clinical specialist in occupational therapy at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, where she focused upon the treatment and education of patients with Parkinson’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. She lectures widely on these topics.

Dr. Elizabeth J. Protas is the Interim Dean, School of Allied Health Sciences, University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, the Ruby Decker Endowed Professor, and a Senior Fellow of the Sealy Center on Aging. Her research and clinical interests focus on exercise, aging and physiological responses to exercise of individuals with chronic disabilities, particularly individuals who have had a stroke or Parkinson’s disease. She has published over 50 manuscripts and book chapters. She has received grant funding from the National Institute of Health, the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, the Department of Veteran’s Affairs and the Foundation for Physical Therapy to support her research. She was an investigator with the Veteran’s Affairs Rehabilitation Research and Development Center of Excellence on Healthy Living with Disabilities and the Parkinson’s Disease Research, Education and Clinical Center. Dr. Protas has been on the American College of Sports Medicine’s Board of Trustees and is a Fellow of the College. She has also served as the past president and former executive director of the Texas Regional Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine. In 2007, the Council on Aging and Adult Development of the American Association for Active Lifestyes and Fitness awarded Dr. Protas the Herbert H. deVries Award for Distinguished Research in the Field of Aging. The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston College of Nursing awarded the Joseph C. Valley Gerontological Professional of the Year to Dr. Protas in 2000. At Texas Woman’s University, she implemented the 3rd doctoral program in physical therapy in the country, and the only postdoctoral fellowship program in physical therapy in the nation. She has been on the Committee for Post-doctoral and Doctoral Awards of the American Physical Therapy Association. For the Foundation for Physical Therapy, Dr. Protas has chaired the Doctoral Research Awards Committee, and has been a member of the Foundation’s Advisory Committee and the Research Awards Committee. She serves as an accreditation site visit team leader for the Commission on Physical Therapy Education Accreditation and has been a member of the Cardiopulmonary Specialty Council and the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. Dr. Protas is a Founding Fellow of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. She received her BS in Physical Therapy in 1968 and her PhD in Education in 1981 from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Eugene C. Lai, MD, PhD is a Professor of Neurology at Baylor College of Medicine and the Director of the Parkinson’s Disease Research, Education and Clinical Center at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston, Texas. Dr. Lai received his bachelor of science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin and his doctorate degree, also in Biochemistry, from the University of Washington. He then studied Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and completed his Neurology residency training at Baylor Affiliated Hospitals in Houston. Dr. Lai is a clinician-scientist who has special interests in the causes and treatments of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He also has expertise in the assessment of motor function and quality of life. He is the principal investigator or co-investigator of many clinical research studies. He has more than one hundred scientific publications and abstracts, and has lectured widely on topics in neurodegenerative diseases. He also enjoys teaching residents and fellows in his clinical practice. He is board certified in Neurology and is also a member of the American Medical Association, American Academy of Neurology, Texas Medical Association, Harris County Medical Society, and Society for Neuroscience. He is on the Medical Advisory Board of the Parkinson Foundation of Harris County and on the Executive Board of the Houston Area Parkinson Society. He is the past President of the Houston Neurological Society and has also served as the Vice-President of the Texas Neurological Society. He has been recognized as one of American’s Top Physicians, Texas Super Doctors and Houston Super Doc.

Parkinson's Disease

I purchased this book about PD when I began Home Health recently and began seeing A LOT of PD patient's. LOVE this book. Was very informative, and I frequently go back and read the book again to refresh. I love to read anything about Physical Therapy or evidence based facts and I would highly recommend this book.

I read Neurorehabilitation in Parkinson's Disease with great interest. As the editors point out in the introduction, patients with Parkinson's are being seen in increasing numbers as our population ages. The book fills the need for a comprehensive text on this complex disease. It addresses both theory and practice and does not neglect the importance of home programs and the needs of the Parkinson's patient in the wider community.
