Eric and Rob Deslauriers take you along their exciting world of skiing through a well thoughtout and easy to follow progression of tools and techniques to show you how to handle a variety of snow conditions for all types of terrain. The book covers in understandable terms how to approach different situations and what drills to practice to prepare you for any situation. In addition to the outstanding instruction each page is beautifully illustrated with the work noted ski photographer Hank DeVre.
If you are an advanced skier or ski teaching professional this is a must have book.

I've read 'em all-- this is the best

Having read every respectable ski instruction book and watched every video available I highly recomend this book to every intermediate and above skier looking to advance. Actually beginners could profit also before the PSIA crowd confuses the simple tricks of skiing on the "new" skis. Skiing well means skiing in all snow conditions and on all types of terrain. As the Deslauriers explain,the same basic physical moves apply to all terrain and snow conditions. Read Chapter 1,then reread it. Do it again. Get it in your head and you'll raise your level several notches. This is the best instructional book in the ski world, bar none. When will they put it on video?

It is amazing that world famous extreme skiers can actually write coherently. (Was it ghostwritten?) Unlike the current crop of freeskiers, the bros. D. must have gotten a little education before opting for the skier's life.

This book did a good job of explaining some of the basic theories of communications, and did a great job of relating them and making them relevant to the typical student. The sections on some of the various linguistic theories, and the sections on kinesics and proxemics were quite interesting. The sections on group communication contain information that virtually anyone could benefit from. The book is concise, but has a reasonable amount of depth for what one would expect in an introductory course. There are section summaries and reviews of terminology that I found to be very beneficial for quick reviews before exams.

Overall, this was a good text and fulfilled my needs for the course.

Great intro to Communications

This is a great introductory book to communications. It scratches the surface of the subject but still educates the reader in practically every area of communication such as: Preparing and outline for a speech, Manage Speech Anxiety, Informative Speaking, Persuasive Speaking and much more. I recommend this text for any student wishing to introduce themselves to the wonderful field of communications.

About the Author

R oger A. Freedman is a Lecturer in Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was an undergraduate at the University of California campuses in San Diego and Los Angeles and did his doctoral research in nuclear theory at Stanford University under the direction of Professor J. Dirk Walecka. Dr. Freedman came to UCSB in 1981 after three years of teaching and doing research at the University of Washington.

At UCSB, Dr. Freedman has taught in both the Department of Physics and the College of Creative Studies, a branch of the university intended for highly gifted and motivated undergraduates. He has published research in nuclear physics, elementary particle physics, and laser physics. In recent years, he has worked to make physics lectures a more interactive experience through the use of classroom response systems and pre-lecture videos.

In the 1970s Dr. Freedman worked as a comic book letterer and helped organize the San Diego Comic-Con (now the world’s largest popular culture convention) during its first few years. Today, when not in the classroom or slaving over a computer, Dr. Freedman can be found either flying (he holds a commercial pilot’s license) or with his wife, Caroline, cheering on the rowers of UCSB Men’s and Women’s Crew.

IN MEMORIAM: HUGH YOUNG (1930—2013)

H ugh D. Young was Emeritus Professor of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University. He earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from that university. He earned his Ph.D. in fundamental particle theory under the direction of the late Richard Cutkosky. He joined the faculty of Carnegie Mellon in 1956 and retired in 2004. He also had two visiting professorships at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Young’s career was centered entirely on undergraduate education. He wrote several undergraduate-level textbooks, and in 1973 he became a coauthor with Francis Sears and Mark Zemansky for their well-known introductory textbooks. In addition to his role on Sears and Zemansky’s University Physics, he was the author of Sears and Zemansky’s College Physics.

Dr. Young earned a bachelor’s degree in organ performance from Carnegie Mellon in 1972 and spent several years as Associate Organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Pittsburgh. He often ventured into the wilderness to hike, climb, or go caving with students in Carnegie Mellon's Explorers Club, which he founded as a graduate student and later advised. Dr. Young and his wife, Alice, hosted up to 50 students each year for Thanksgiving dinners in their home.

Always gracious, Dr. Young expressed his appreciation earnestly: “I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to my colleagues at Carnegie Mellon, especially Professors Robert Kraemer, Bruce Sherwood, Ruth Chabay, Helmut Vogel, and Brian Quinn, for many stimulating discussions about physics pedagogy and for their support and encouragement during the writing of several successive editions of this book. I am equally indebted to the many generations of Carnegie Mellon students who have helped me learn what good teaching and good writing are, by showing me what works and what doesn’t. It is always a joy and a privilege to express my gratitude to my wife, Alice, and our children, Gretchen and Rebecca, for their love, support, and emotional sustenance during the writing of several successive editions of this book. An okay story.

Love Me Tender by Ally Blake is a romance story but not a favorite of mine. It begins okay but then it's slow to finish. It's more or less a spin of a classic tale but it's just not as well written as I would have loved to see.
The story is good. the characters are well written and defined. But the follow through was just not there for me.

This story started out good but then just settled into a bland rut. There was no real "spark" in any of the characters for me to even care about what happened to them. The only really interesting person in the book was Guy (he was totally funny!) and he just wasn't in it often enough.

The heroine, Sera, was just not someone that I could get interested in. How someone who was working on a PhD, could rebuild cars, drove a muscle car, was into martial arts, and a jillion other things could be so utterly boring is just amazing. I see that many other people loved this book. That being the case, I would never tell someone to skip it. It may be someone else's cup of tea....just not mine.

I have read a few books from Ally Blake and I have found them to worth the read - this one is no different. Love me Tender is the sweet, charming story of two people who both have things that have occurred in their past that have affected the way they see their future. Sera, who was raised by her father, has lived her life around cars and the garage that her father worked in...she is a bit of a tomboy. Her father has always worked hard to support her and he has pushed her to receive the best education that she can and she has numerous degrees. Now that he was injured and unable to work, Sera decided that she will take care of him. She quits school and searches for a job. She interviews with Hazel, an outspoken woman in her 70's who has decided to open a matchmaking business. She needs a website and Sera is hired to design it. Sera meets Murdoch, who is the contractor hired to over see the renovation of Hazel's space for the business. He is also a very special person in Hazel's life.

There is a strong attraction between Murdoch and Sera; however, he is determined to fight it. Because of an event in his past which involved Hazel’s granddaughter, he doesn't feel that he deserves to fall in love and have a relationship. Sera finds herself falling in love with him but he is a stubborn man. However, Hazel has plans and she starts playing matchmaker.

This is a sweet story in which a man has to work past the guilt of his past in order to move on and a woman has to let go and realize that she deserves to have her own life separate from her father...and her father needs the same. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a romance that that works through some issues before working out.
