About the Author
Carol Berkin received her undergraduate degree from Barnard College and her PhD from Columbia University. Her dissertation won the Bancroft Award. She is now presidential professor of history at Baruch College and the Graduate Center of City University of New York. She has written JONATHAN SEWALL: ODYSSEY OF AN AMERICAN LOYALIST (1974), FIRST GENERATIONS: WOMEN IN COLONIAL AMERICA (l996), A BRILLIANT SOLUTION: INVENTING THE AMERICAN CONSTITUTION (2002), and REVOLUTIONARY MOTHERS: WOMEN IN THE STRUGGLE FOR AMERICA'S INDEPENDENCE (2005). She has edited WOMEN OF AMERICA: A HISTORY (with Mary Beth Norton, 1979); WOMEN, WAR AND REVOLUTION (with Clara M. Lovett, 1980); WOMEN'S VOICES, WOMEN'S LIVES: DOCUMENTS IN EARLY AMERICAN HISTORY (with Leslie Horowitz, 1998); and LOOKING FORWARD/LOOKING BACK: A WOMEN'S STUDIES READER (with Judith Pinch and Carole Appel, 2005). She was contributing editor on southern women for THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SOUTHERN CULTURE and has appeared in the PBS series "Liberty! She has served on the Planning Committee for the U.S. Department of Education's National Assessment of Educational Progress, and she chaired the CLEP Committee for Educational Testing Service. She serves on the Board of Trustees of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and the National Council for History Education.

Christopher L. Miller received his BS degree from Lewis and Clark College and his PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is currently associate professor of history at the University of Texas-Pan American. He is the author of PROPHETIC WORLDS: INDIANS AND WHITES ON THE COLUMBIA PLATEAU (1985), which was republished in 2003 as part of the "Columbia Northwest Classics Series" by the University of Washington Press. His articles and reviews have appeared in numerous scholarly journals and anthologies as well as standard reference works. Dr. Miller also is active in contemporary Indian affairs. He served, for example, as a participant in the American Indian Civics Project funded by the Kellogg Foundation. He has been a research fellow at the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History at Harvard University and was the Nikolay V. Sivachev Distinguished Chair in American History at Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russia). Professor Miller also has been active in projects designed to improve history teaching, including programs funded by the Meadows Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, and other agencies.

Robert W. Cherny received his BA from the University of Nebraska and his MA and PhD from Columbia University. He is professor of history at San Francisco State University. His books include COMPETING VISIONS: A HISTORY OF CALIFORNIA (with Richard Griswold del Castillo, 2005); AMERICAN POLITICS IN THE GILDED AGE, 1868-1900 (1997); SAN FRANCISCO, 1865-1932: POLITICS, POWER, AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT (with William Issel, 1986); A RIGHTEOUS CAUSE: THE LIFE OF WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN (1985, 1994); and POPULISM, PROGRESSIVISM, AND THE TRANSFORMATION OF NEBRASKA POLITICS, 1885-1915 (1981). He is coeditor of AMERICAN LABOR AND THE COLD WAR: UNIONS, POLITICS, AND POSTWAR POLITICAL CULTURE (with William Issel and Keiran Taylor, 2004). His articles on politics and labor in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries have appeared in journals, anthologies, and historical dictionaries and encyclopedias. In 2000, he and Ellen Du Bois coedited a special issue of the "Pacific Historical Review" that surveyed women's suffrage movements in nine locations around the Pacific Rim. He has been an NEH Fellow, Distinguished Fulbright Lecturer at Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russia), and Visiting Research Scholar at the University of Melbourne (Australia). He has served as president of H-Net (an association of more than 100 electronic networks for scholars in the humanities and social sciences), the Society for Historians of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, and the Southwest Labor Studies Association; as treasurer of the Organization of American Historians; and as a member of the council of the American Historical Association, Pacific Coast Branch.

Born in Riverside, California, James L. Gormly received a B.A. from the University of Arizona and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. He is now professor of history and chair of the history department at Washington and Jefferson College. He has written THE COLLAPSE OF THE GRAND ALLIANCE (1970) and FROM POTSDAM TO THE COLD WAR (1979). His articles and reviews have appeared in DIPLOMATIC HISTORY, THE JOURNAL OF AMERICAN HISTORY, THE AMERICAN HISTORICAL REVIEW, THE HISTORIAN, THE HISTORY TEACHER, and THE JOURNAL OF INTERDISCIPLINARY HISTORY.

Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Douglas R. Egerton received his undergraduate degree from Arizona State University and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Georgetown University. He is professor of history at Le Moyne College. His books include YEAR OF METEORS: THE ELECTION OF 1860 AND THE SECESSION WINTER (2010); DEATH OR LIBERTY: AFRICAN AMERICANS AND REVOLUTIONARY AMERICA (2009); THE ATLANTIC WORLD: A HISTORY, 1400-1888 (with Alison Games, Kris Lane, and Donald R. Wright, 2007); REBELS, REFORMERS & AND REVOLUTIONARIES: COLLECTED ESSAYS AND SECOND THOUGHTS (2002); HE SHALL GO OUT FREE: THE LIVES OF DENMARK VESEY (1999); GABRIEL'S REBELLION: THE VIRGINIA SLAVE CONSPIRACIES OF 1800 & 1802 (1993); and CHARLES FENTON MERCER AND THE TRIAL OF NATIONAL CONSERVATISM (1989). He was script consultant and on-camera commentator for two PBS series, "Africans in America" (1998) and "This Far By Faith: Stories of African American Religion" (2003). His articles on race and politics in early America have appeared in journals, anthologies, and encyclopedias. Professor Egerton served on the dissertation prize committee for the Southern Historical Association, and the book and article prize committees for the Society of Historians of the Early Republic. He has served on the editorial boards of the JOURNAL OF THE EARLY REPUBLIC and THE HISTORIAN, and he was awarded the John Adams Chair (Netherlands) Fulbright Scholar Distinguished Lecturing Award.

Price is way down!

I bought this book at the beginning of the semester because the price offered on here way WAY lower than that of my University bookstore. I payed around $45 for it 15 weeks ago and now it is even lower!
You honestly cant beat buying/renting a textbook on here, they even pay for the return shipping. I can honestly say maybe I opened this book four times in that 15 weeks because my professor din't have us use it much. But from what I did read this book puts everything in pretty easy to understand terms and highlights a lot of the main points and themes of the section on the sides of the pages. Would recommend!

About the Author
Hugh Jackson has had a long academic interest in the history of religion in Australia, and is the author of Churches and People in Australia and New Zealand 1860-1930 (Allen & Unwin, 1987). After studying theology at the University of Cambridge, he served for a short period as an Anglican clergyman. From 1978 to 1988 he lectured in Australian History at the University of Auckland. He is married, with two adult children.

In this new edition of their book, they set out the previously unknown story of how complex and expensive engineering work was undertaken to create an elaborate flood tunnel on the island. Built to frustrate treasure seekers attempting to get at the valuables buried decades earlier at the bottom of the island's Money Pit, the tunnel has admirably served its purpose. It has ensured that all efforts up to now to recover the treasure have been unsuccessful.

Oak Island poses two different challenges for treasure seekers. There is a deep mine shaft, at the bottom of which the treasure lies. The authors offer evidence that this treasure came from the wreck of a Spanish galleon in the seventeenth century.

Even more mystifying than the mine shaft is the complex tunnel which links it to the ocean. Harris and MacPhie have determined that the project would have required a labour force of over 100 men to supplement a small force of experienced miners. The work would have taken almost two years to complete. In new chapters written for this edition, they present the evidence they have discovered in British military history records which shows who commanded this force, how it reached Nova Scotia, and when the work was carried out.

The new facts and insights offered in this book are a startling and convincing addition to the history of Oak Island.

About the Author

GRAHAM HARRIS has been involved in many major engineering and mining projects in Canada's Maritime provinces elsewhere in Canada and internationally. He lives near Bedeque, Prince Edward Island.

LES MacPHIE is a mining engineer who works for one of Canada's leading engineering firms. Born in Cape Breton, he lives in Montreal.

Great explanation of how they did it....

This is a fascinating book written by engineers who detail how the massive project could be done. I'm a Curse of Oak Island junky, and I believe Rick had this book in the war room in season 4 episode 14 when he selected the location of GAL-1. The idea of British involvement correlates to the British coins and buttons found on the island in season 4. Unfortunately, this book seems continually unavailable, so I bought it electronically at another site. However, an e-reader version doesn't do it justice because of all the figures involved,and therefore I recommend the print version. Worth the money!

About the Author

Daniel Limmer (Author). Dan Limmer, EMT-P, has been involved in EMS for over 25 years. He remains active as a paramedic with Kennebunk Fire Rescue in Kennebunk, Maine, and the Kennebunkport EMS (KEMS) in Kennebunkport, Maine. A passionate educator, Dan teaches EMT and paramedic courses at the Southern Maine Community College in South Portland, Maine, and has taught at the George Washington University in Washington, DC and the Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York. He is a charter member of the National Association of EMS Educators and a member of the National Association of EMTs (NAEMT) for which he serves on the Advanced Medical Life Support Committee.

Dan was formerly involved in law enforcement, beginning as a dispatcher and retiring as a police officer in Colonie, New York, where he received three command recognition awards as well as the distinguished service award (Officer of the Year) in 1987. During his 20-year law enforcement career he served in the communications, patrol, juvenile, narcotics, and training units.

In addition to authoring several EMS journal articles, Dan is co-author of a number of EMS textbooks for Brady including First Responder: A Skills Approach, Essentials of Emergency Care, Advanced Medical Life Support, the military and fire service editions of Emergency Care, and others. He speaks frequently at regional, state, and national EMS conferences.

Michael F O'Keefe (Author). Mike O'Keefe, MS, EMT-P, became the Vermont EMS State Training Coordinator in 1989. He has a Master's degree in biostatistics and was an EMT-Intermediate for 16 years before becoming a paramedic 10 years ago.

Mike was chosen to participate in the development of all four U.S. Department of Tranpsortation National Standard EMS Curricula (for First Responders, EMT-Basics, EMT-Intermediates, and EMT-Paramedics). He was also on the steering committee that developed the Geriatric Education for Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) course for the American Geriatrics Society and coauthored a chapter of the textbook for that course.

Mike is co-author of the Brady text Essentials of Emergency Care and is a contributing writer to the Brady text Paramedic Care: Principles & Practice. He is very interested in promoting EMS research, particularly in rural areas. Mike is active as a volunteer EMS provider in northwestern Vermont and is a speaker at EMS conferences.

Edward T. Dickinson (Medical Editor). Edward T. Dickinson, MD, NREMT-P, FACEP, is currently Assistant Professor and Director of EMS Field Operations in the Department of Emergency Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He is Medical Director of the Malvern Fire Company, the Berwyn Fire Company, and the Township of Haverford paramedics in Pennsylvania. He is a residency-trained, board-certified emergency medicine physician who is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Dr. Dickinson began his career in emergency services in 1979 as a firefighter-EMT in upstate New York. He has remained active in fire service and EMS for the past 25 years. He frequently rides with EMS units and has maintained his certification as a National Registry EMT-Paramedic.

He has served as medical editor for numerous Brady EMT-B and First Responder texts and is the author of Fire Service Emergency Care and co-author of Emergency Care, Fire Service Edition, and Emergency Incident Rehabilitation. He is co-editor of ALS Case Studies in Emergency Care.

Good wholistically, bad for reference

While the book is very informative, the organization seems haphazard. An important distinction to make is haphazard does not mean incomplete, it means that searching for information about a subject when the key terms are not intuitive is very hard. For example, terms and concepts related to perfusion is dispersed throughout the book in separate topics, each one only giving a piece of the puzzle of what perfusion is, details, and how it goes wrong. So understanding perfusion by looking at a particular section is not possible. All in all this is a good book because of the diagrams and congenial language.

As an operational EMT I feel this book is great. I do not understand why other reviewers labeled it as 'inadequate' for a national text when any and every EMT knows that you must refer to your state specific protocols IN ADDITION TO, NEVER IN LIEU OF the nationally accepted training texts.

MyBradyLab e-text code did not work

I have used BradyBooks several times in classes for Outdoor Emergency Care and EMS. I have used the online e-text materials each time because they helped to reinforce concepts. I bought the book on Amazon with the e-text included, however, the code did not work. The error information I received told me that the code was not for this class, even though it was the code from the folder included with the book, and said it was for Emergency Care. I called the BradyBook support line, and they told me the same thing. They said I had to contact Amazon for a new code. Not wanting to waste anymore time on this, I just paid an additional $15, and bought access on my own since I did not even know how to address this with Amazon. I don't know how this happened, but I will not buy the e-text code when I order any future books, and will just buy it separately.

About the Author

Wolfgang Birkfellner studied theoretical physics at, and holds a Ph.D in medical physics from, the University of Vienna, Austria. Currently, he is heading the Digital Image Processing Laboratory at the Center for Biomedical Engineering and Physics at the Medical University of Vienna. He is also a reviewer and editorial board member for major journals in the field, program committee member for international conferences, and principal investigator for several third-party funded research projects. Previously, he served as senior researcher at the University Hospital Basel/Switzerland and associate professor of medical physics at the Center for Biomedical Engineering and Physics of Vienna Medical School.

Dr. Simpson has written an excellent introduction to the fundamental ideas, principles, and institutions that comprise the world's financial system. Here you'll find a clear and succinct approach to understanding the essential financial and economic tools needed for future success in the business or academic world. In a stark contrast the one thousand page textbooks of the modern world, Simpson's text manages to cover all of the critical topics for analyzing and interpreting financial markets and the macro-economy in about three-hundred and fifty pages. At a fraction of the price of standard textbooks, this straightforward, simple approach of a low page count, black & white pages, clear diagrams, and carefully constructed equations make it an ideal resource of future reference for professionals of all types to keep on their desk.

A few potential readers could be discouraged by the lack of hand-holding in the writing relative to the competition. Some of the more sophisticated concepts presented in the form of abstract equations can be intimidating at times, but anyone with a basic background in mathematics and introductory macroeconomics should have little difficulty in following the lessons. Those of you in the business world who are unfamiliar with economic theory need not worry. Most of the work on macroeconomics is review from entry-level books and then carefully expanded upon in order to connect them to the world of banking and finance.

However, one point of irritation is the lack of answers to even just a few of the review questions. A few topics require a method of allowing the reader assure himself that he has fully understood what he has read. The historical background of the financial institutions of the U.S. and the general history of money and banking could stand to be more fleshed out as well. Ultimately, these are minor points of contention in an overall solid presentation. In short, for those of you who are wishing to build a foundation to move on from elementary theory and practices to more advanced tools and resources, you would be hard pressed to find a more concise (yet accurate and authoritative) guide for the money.

It's a very expensive book and too technical and it's not worth its price.

I would rather buy the FT guide to financial markets and other books that provide easier and more complete info on the subject.
