But when Cassidy disappears again and won’t take his calls, he knows something isn’t right. Cassidy is keeping something from him, and he’s not above using Blake resources to find out what.

TEMPTING FATE (BOOK 9)

What a lovely story. Another Blake man loses his heart. This story is a little different. Changing is the baby of the Blake men. Lately he has been feeling like he is missing out on something. An old hook up comes back to town thinking that maybe they are meant to be, but Channing isn't having it. His heart remembers a fellow law student and when the opportunity arises that he may see her at an engagement party of mutual friends, he acts on their meeting. Cassidy cannot believe she still have feelings for a man who seems to have a girlfriend. Little does she know, but Channing is about to pull out all the stops for her.

Love it and it was worth the wait.

This was a very touching and sweet story. Channing and Cassidy are perfectly made for each other. I love the whole Blake Boys series and I can't wait for the next installment to come out. I love how this book is about family and compassion, it was great catching up on all of the family. I here John jacob and Teri Lynn's story is coming out soon and I hope Bo and Charisma's comes out as well. This is a well written and heart warming story.

Ok, So I Just Finished Reading Channing and Cassidy's Story and My Mind is Reeling and My Heart Is Heavy. Why Do I Get The Feeling That Cassidy Will Be The One To Break The Blake's Super Genetic Gene Pool and Give Channing A Girl But Won't Live Long Enough Too See Her Grow Up. I Was Blown Away By This Story Line But I Guess Every Good Series Needs A Curve Ball To Mix Things Up A Bit And This Delivered. Although When It Was Revealed Why Cassidy Disappeared For One Year I Cried, Literally! I Just Hope That As These Characters Are Brought To Life On Paper We Get To Experience More Happy Times than Sad. I ABSOLUTELY Love Rhonda Laurel and Her Creative Abilities To Give Us Ten Books And Counting With Such Complex Characters And The Best Is Yet To Come. I'm Counting Down To The Continuing Story Of Channing And Cassidy. Mrs. or Ms. Laurel May The Writing GODS Keep Cassidy Alive For A Looooong Time. THANK YOU RHONDA LAUREL

Mark Sutherland Williams is a Judge of the First-Tier Tribunal based at Southampton. He was previously a barrister at 3PB, where he appeared as counsel in a number of the most significant cases decided in the proceeds of crime field, and was head of the Asset Forfeiture Group for 10 years.
HHJ Michael Hopmeier is a Circuit Judge based at Kingston Crown Court. He was previously a barrister at Hardwicke Chambers and, during a 30 year career at the Bar, undertook many high-profile fraud cases, both prosecuting and defending.
Rupert Jones is a barrister at the Chambers of David Fisher QC and David Perry QC. He was called to the Bar in 2000 and specializes in the field of asset forfeiture and proceeds of crime.

To the cynical, the old adage that `crime doesn't pay' is a bit of a fiction. In times of recession especially, there are plenty of criminals, white collar and otherwise, who, with varying degrees of desperation break the law, violently or surreptitiously, in order to enrich themselves at the expense of others. Not surprisingly, legislation aimed at confiscation or recovery of the proceeds of crime is something the public would like to see more of.

Quoted in the preface of this authoritative work of reference from the Oxford University Press, Baroness Scotland QC has stressed the importance not only of the `stripping of ill-gotten gains from the criminal classes', but also that the recovered funds should be `utilised and invested back into law enforcement, schools, hospitals and other worthy causes'... thus ensuring that the role of the proceeds of crime practitioner is reinforced, now and in the future.

The authors express concern, however, that `since the introduction of the Proceeds of Crime Act in 2002 (POCA) there does not appear to have been a marked improvement or breakthrough in terms of recovery, in fact, the opposite.' Comparing the true proceeds of crime figures being channeled through the UK economy', they note that the amounts actually recovered (�161m in 2010-11 for example) are paltry by comparison.

Despite weaknesses and shortcomings, however, the fight against acquisitive crime continues apace. Serious Fraud Office Director David Green, writing in the Foreword, states that he has made the recovery of the proceeds of crime a top priority for the SFO. `The basic principle behind POCA -- that crime should not pay -- needs to be at the forefront of all investigations and prosecutions' he says `whether the individual is a burglar, a drug dealer, a money launderer, or a sophisticated fraudster.'

Statements like these are of course reassuring, both for the public and for practitioners, as well as the judiciary. And in the armoury of weaponry against crime, this book, now in this new fourth edition, is a really big gun. Heading a team of at least ten contributors, the learned authors offer their extensive expertise in what is an extremely complex area of law. Mark Sutherland Williams refers to his co-editor Michael Hopmeier as `the judge that teaches judges' about this area of the law. And Rupert Jones is described as `one of the leading asset forfeiture practitioners at the Bar.' This distinguished edition, however, has been launched with considerable sadness following the untimely death of Trevor Millington, who for twenty-five years played a pivotal role in the development of proceeds of crime law. This edition is therefore dedicated to his memory.

Covering the full spectrum of issues relating to the recovery and confiscation of the proceeds of crime, from restraint orders to enforcement and restoration, the book provides valuable research resources, including extensive tables of legislation, European legislation and international treaties and conventions, plus no less than twenty-one appendices. To aid navigation for the busy practitioner, there are numbered paragraphs throughout, a detailed table of contents and a twenty-five page index at the back.

As a clear statement of the current legislation pertaining to the confiscation and restraint of the proceeds of crime, this book is an invaluable aid to all who practice in this difficult area. The publication date is cited as at May 2013.

Showcases his imagination

Of all the "New Wave" SF writers that emerged in the sixties and seventies, Brian Aldiss is probably the least flashiest and most consistent. His books have this sort of quiet confidence, as if he already knows they're unique and doesn't need to go about proclaiming it. Most of the time the trick is in the presentation. In this novel we have an Earth millions of years in the future, a planet that has stopped rotating and is thus half light and half dark, a planet where most of the animals have died out and plants have taken over, evolving into all sorts of weird lifeforms, all of which you have to read to believe. Humans are still around but most traces of civilization are gone, they live fairly nomadic and primitive existences. The biggest problem with this book is that the setup is just about all you get, while there is a plot of sorts, it's for the most part episodic and at best ramshackle, lurching from situation to situation. But it's Aldiss' vision of the future Earth, orbiting a sun soon to go nova, and a planet covered in all kinds of fantastic forms of life, that sustains the book. Every time you turn the page something new and bizarre greets you and I'm just amazed the man was able to think of all these things. Granted most of the plot is devoted to showing off these things but when then they're this consistently entertaining I'm not going to argue too much. Honestly there probably is some kind of allegorical aspect to the plot that I'm just missing because I'm too dense but hey, whatever. Fans of pure science probably won't be too thrilled because Aldiss' extrapolations of the far future seem to have little to do with actual science, but as I always say, don't let science get in the way of a good story. This is an absolutely fascinating story that ranks with his better works and while it's not his absolute masterpiece, it certainly deserves to be read.

Hothouse is so different - it is barely Sci-Fi

The novel Hothouse first came to my attention in the picture book/review "Alien Landscapes" by Robert Holdstock and Malcolm Edwards. The art and description contained therein inspired me to read Hothouse, as well as a few other classic sci-fi novels (e.g. Rendezvous with Rama by A.C. Clarke and Mission of Gravity by Hal Clement, both of which I highly recommend). I was not disappointed.
Hothouse is difficult to squarely categorize as sci-fi, as Aldiss does not project human achievement and technological evolution into a plausible future. Instead, he does so with biological evolution, moving mankind into the passive role of bystander. Plants have come to dominate the natural world, assuming the characteristics and ecological functions of the animal kingdom. But it is far from a utopian garden. The main characters are assailed with hostility every step of the way.
The book is an odyssey of sorts, with the main character, Gren, tossed violently about this very green world on a voyage of discovery, both internal and external. Aldiss seems to like this theme. The various plant forms which Gren encounters along the way will stir the imagination with their bizarre nature, although I disagree with another reviewer's comment that their introduction appears to be the only purpose for the book.
Aldiss leaves quite a bit unexplained in the book, which I suppose is my only criticism. But even then, it lends the text a sense of mystery which, when approached with the right perspective, is charming.
I thoroughly enjoyed the read.

The Vision of Future Earth under Mushroom Influence

This is an ambitious work by Brian Aldiss, trying to depict the life of the future Earth, nearing the last stage of our Sun's evolution before it shut down.

The time is millions of years from now, the sun has evolve into a red giant, the Earth has stopped rotating, creating a perpetual day and perpetual night in the region of the Earth. Human has ceased to be the dominant species, many animal species have gone extinct, the dominant life forms are plants. The last remnants of human species live above the gigantic banyan tree. The sun is simply too hot to face directly forever trapping human to live under the shade of tree.

The story starts with a group of human, showing the details of daily life above the tree, which is nasty, brutish, and short (to quote Thomas Hobbes). Most predators are in form of plants. Animal predators had been long gone, only a very small numbers left. The world that is created by Aldiss is immense with details, and he gives the species very unique name.

Unfortunately, the story later loose the direction. The events portrayed seems to be trivial to interest the readers. Later, nearing the end of the novel, the plot picks up, thus saving the novel from becoming a total mess.

What interest me most is that Aldis used biology in building his sci-fi setting. This is refreshing because most sci-fi are playing with physics. His choice of setting in the near-nova Sun is also unique. In general I would say, the setting is the best part that you can get from this novel, because the plot of the story is not as interesting as the world building.

PS: This is the vision of future earth, if you have too much mushroom in your head!

Timothy C. Lieuwen is an Associate Professor in Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. Prof. Lieuwen also serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Propulsion and Power.

Vigor Yang is Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology. Professor Yang also serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Propulsion and Power and is the author/editor for several books on liquid and solid rocket propulsion.
