About the Author
Buckley was employed in educational positions, including superintendent of schools, dean of a college, principal, teacher and Director of Education, on all levels of public, private and parochial schools. He was also busy in diverse occupations: law enforcement, professional athletics, radio and TV announcing, Marriage Encounter, psychological institutions, speech writing and public speaking, publishing, and business management. Currently he is a professional writer.
John Reid has worked with the Archdiocese of Seattle for 18 years where he had responsibilitites for formation, training, and placement for lay and ordained ministers and was also Coordinator of Transistion Services. John has given talks and workshops nationally on leadership, collaboration, and transition. Besides working in diocesan planning and ministries, his consulting services include work within healthcare, higher education, and government.

The Manual For Police Interrogations

DNA exonerations of persons wrongly convicted of crimes shows that false confessions are a significant problem, and that persons who are factually innocent nevertheless confess to crimes as serious as rape an murder without being guilty. As I have read a lot of articles and books lately that talk about the things that promote false confessions, the "Reid Method" of police interrogation is a ubiquitous component of the problem. This method dates back to the 1950's, and has been taught to every major and most minor police organization.
The idea that a trained officer can tell when someone is telling the truth--using the methods in this book--has been demonstrated to be false by recent behavioral studies. The assumptions underlying much of this method, and the encouragement of officer's rote testimony as to those unvalidated assumptions can be picked up in this book. The components of an interrogation, the way an officer is trained to approach the subject, and structure the questions, police behavior, and environment of the questioning are all laid out here, as well as the significant difference in police thinking between what is an "interview" and what is an "interrogation."
Unless you work in the criminal justice field--as a police officer, prosecutor, criminal defense lawyer or judge, you probably won't have any use for this book. If you need to know the details of how police officers think about interrogating suspects, and the methods they use, this book is absolutely essential.

I read this book several years ago (third edition) and downloaded the fifth edition to take with me to teach an interrogation program in Moldova. This book was the perfect training resource. Whether you are new in the business or an "old hand" , this is probably the best book on interrogation ever written.

Teaching how to get confessions

When a textbook reaches its fifth edition it tells you a couple of things. First, in the time it takes to edition number 5, all of the errata, typos, grammar mistakes have probably been cleaned up. Second that says that quite a number of instructors have found the book to be the one they use in their class, otherwise the publisher would not be willing to issue another edition -- you might even consider a fifth edition as prima facie evidence that the book has become the standard text on the subject.
Having said all of that, yes, this book is certainly one of the standard texts on the subject of conducting interrogations. The book clearly points out that the brilliant scientific analysis of the crime scene isn't usually the way in which crimes are solved. Instead, studies show that perhaps 10% of the time there is evidence collected, and about half the time that evidence goes to scientific analysis. This leaves the bulk of solved crimes coming from interrogations. Yet at this time interrogations are getting a lot of bad publicity. There are investigations into the CIA and its use of waterboarding, etc. The news media has been filled with reports of borderline illegal forfeiture situations based on nothing more than the investigating officer saying that he smells pot.
The books obvious goal is to teach law enforcement officers how to extract a confession. Not, of course, by applying any pressure, but often admitting that only after many hours of interrogation did the officer get a confession. Not, of course, that being interrogated for several hours isn't applying pretty strong pressure. It makes it clear that the first, and perhaps only thing a person being interrogating should say is Talk To My Lawyer. Finally, if you are a criminal, you should read this book to know what you are likely to be facing.
