About the Author
Author Karen Anderson has spent countless hours watching cats and humans interact, listening to cat owners tell their stories, relating with cats and reading a myriad of books on the subject in order to satisfy a great appetite for understanding and appreciating the feline. Raised in a family of dog-lovers, she had a difficult time persuading her parents to allow a cat in the house when she was young. This is a GREAT small book. Questions and Answers are all on 1 page each and so you aren't looking throughout the book for answers. I have referred to this book many times and found all the answers I have needed. Would recommend highly.

Bought this book for my best friend who has a cat that bites sometimes. She said she has learned a lot about her cat reading this book and really is enjoying learning a lot about cats that she did not know. Great book and cute pictures! Thank you.

About the Author
Ann Charters (Ph.D., Columbia University) is a professor of English at the University of Connecticut and has taught courses in the short story for over thirty years. A preeminent authority on the Beat writers, Charters has written a critically acclaimed biography of Jack Kerouac; compiled Beats & Company, a collection of her own photographs of Beat writers; and edited the best-selling Portable Beat Reader. Her most recent books are The Kerouac Reader, Selected Letters of Jack Kerouac, 1957-1969, Beat Down to Your Soul, and The Story and Its Writer, Seventh Edition, available in full and compact versions.

Samuel Charters has taught creative writing and published widely in a variety of genres, including 11 books of poetry, 4 novels, a book of criticism on contemporary American poetry, a biography (co-authored with Ann Charters) of the poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, and translations of the poetry of Tomas Transtromer and Edith Sodergran. An ethnomusicologist, he produces blues and jazz recordings and has published many books about music, among them a history of New Orleans jazz and a study of bluesman Robert Johnson.

I bought this book for my ENG102 class. This book was used almost every class during class and for homework. It is full of short stories and poems. It has a lot of good stories and was a necessity for the class. I bought the book new and it came in perfect condition. I would definitely recommend buying this book if it is required for the course.

Excellent choice for introductory literature classes!

I am a part-time ("adjunct") professor at a California community college, and I switched from using another LARGE literature anthology to this one for English 1-B for the following reasons:
1) Very good selection of readings, including a smattering of very contemporary authors like Edwidge Danticat and Sherman Alexie, a section on "small press" poetry and poets, and so on.
2) I found on opening the book the first time that for Faulkner's story, "A Rose for Emily," there is an excerpt of an interview with Faulkner where he recalls what image (in his mind) inspired him to write this story--very informative, good supplement to the story, and a more personal artistic element that I haven't found in other anthologies.
3) The price is high--but not as high as some other anthologies, at least for the paperback edition. I try to give my students SOME break in the governmental and corporate campaign to bankrupt them (seemingly) by the time they are educated!

Prefer 5th Edition to 6th

I adopted the 5th edition of this text because I liked the text selection and the critical apparatus. I would note in particular: the student accessible section on "Critical Perspectives and Literary Theory" (though some of that material seems a bit dated), the theme-reinforcing "Conversations on Stories and Storytellers" pieces, and the suggested connections between selections in the anthology. Part of the text's charm, too, is its inclusion of contemporaries -- like David Foster Wallace in the 5th ed and Lydia Davis and Roberto Bolano in the 6th -- alongside more frequently anthologized authors.

Some of the changes for this edition make the text a bit less useful for my purposes, however. "Address and Tribute" section has shrunk and appears to clip out, for instance, Ezra Pound's A Pact, which would have been an excellent short piece to retain given the healthy Whitman excerpts, the section devoted to Imagism, and Pound's nonfiction exposition on Whitman. Why did we lose that? The 5th ed David Foster Wallace selection "Good People" (which pairs so well with Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants") has been replaced by a much shorter Wallace story. "Good People" now appears in the most recent edition of The Norton Introduction to Literature, incidentally, which is probably what I'll end up adopting for my sections this Spring.

About the Author
Dr Dimitrina Spencer obtained her doctorate in Social Anthropology from Oxford University. She researches learning, science and technology at the Department of Education, University of Oxford, and works as a relational psychotherapist in training for the Oxfordshire County Council. She is a co-editor of Emotions in the Field: The Psychology and Anthropology of Fieldwork Experience (Stanford 2010). Dr James Davies obtained his doctorate in Social Anthropology from Oxford University. He is a Senior Lecturer in Social Anthropology and Psychotherapy at Roehampton University. He is also a qualified psychotherapist (UKCP) and has worked widely in the National Health Service and other clinical settings. He is author of The Making of Psychotherapists: An Anthropological Analysis, and is co-editor of Emotions in the Field: The Psychology and Anthropology of Fieldwork Experience. His next book on the anthropology of suffering is due to appear next year.

Excellent introduction to Pure Land Buddhism

I just completed reading this warm hearted book and decided to write a review right away! It is written in a down to earth, conversational style. The authenticity and sincerity of the authors Satya, Kaspa and all the other contributors shines through from every page.

I can recommend this as a one of the most accessible introductions to Pure Land or "other power" Buddhism that I have come across. I say this as a former Buddhist monk, having read a few hundred books on Buddhism and spirituality in general.

This book is a delicious read. It is both informative and inspiring. It gently leads the reader to a growing familiarity with an approach to Buddhism that many in the west are unaware of, yet is the dominant tradition in the east. Reading it has left me feeling clean hearted and bathed in the light of the Buddha.

I trust you will enjoy the book as much as I did!

Another win for Boynton!!

This book is PERFECT!

Of course, it's easily lyrical (which are her best) and our kids LOVED reading it the first night we had it home. We read it three times!!

The entire book is about different types of dinosaurs doing different dance moves. Educational in the names of different dinosaurs and it encourages kids to get up and move. Kids will have no problem acting out any dance moves the dinosaurs are doing.

Super colorful, incredibly interactive, definitely a book you could read in a group setting or for a children's reading time.

Great addition to a childs library

Adorable illustrations and a fun read with children. Really liked seeing different dinosaur names but could be challenging for a child trying to read the book. I bought this book for my twin nephews, so it was a pleasant surprise to see they had included twins in the book. We are a big fan of Sandra Boynton and this book was another hit!

Please don't hate me for saying this, but I think of Boynton's books as being little more than fillers in my toddler's library. They don't hold a candle to Dr. Seuss, Eric Carle, Eric Hill, Anna Dewdney, etc. And she churns out books like there's no tomorrow.
I honestly don't know why she's so popular. I have a rather large kids book collection, and there are much better options out there. But I can't pass up the insanely cheap price on Amazon for her books!!! This one was less than $3 brand new! I guess you get what you pay for.
It's not a bad book. The art is just ok. The storytelling is bland. There is no moral. It's just a nice, cheap way to build up my toddler's book library.
