She is married with three daughters and five grandchildren, and she grows most of her family’s food. In her leisure time, she edits manuscripts, travels and writes children’s books featuring Pennsylvania Dutch cultural themes based on her childhood farming background.

A comprehensive study

Having spent the past two decades in an on and off study of various Old Order groups, I was fascinated to discover "Utopian Communities," by Elsie Hamel. Although the subtitle might lead a person to assume that this is simply a description and analysis of the Hutterites, Amish, and Mennonites, the book is far more than that. It also provides an overview of various other utopian communities, such as the Shakers, the Oneida Community, New Harmony, and others. The purpose of the book is to determine why it is that the Old Order groups survived while these other utopian communities did not. The thesis is that the survivors (that is, the Hutterites, Amish, and Mennonites) had a common belief system and common goals that provided (and provide) cohesiveness, while many of these other groups did not. Along with seeking to establish this thesis, Hamels provides many interesting insights into these various groups, including the three Old Order groups, which, although not the whole of her study, are those that are described in greatest detail.

One thing I would have liked explained in greater detail is just why, unlike some of the aforementioned utopian communities that did not survive, the Amana Colonies did. While it is true that they abandoned their communal living in 1932, they continue to function as a society and a corporation, and appear to be thriving in their 10,000 acres or so in east-central Iowa. Having visited them twice within the past half year or so, I can attest to this.

Great insight and wisdom for all Dreamers

This book explained incredibly well how to interpret my dreams and it revolutionized how I approached reading my dreams. This book is very insightful and full of wisdom. Doug Addison explains in such a way that is very simple, easy to understand, digest and apply. His wisdom and teachings, coupled with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, will teach you how to interpret even the most seemingly complex dreams. I absolutely loved and soaked up everything Doug had to say, and it catapulted me into better interpretation. This is a great book for both beginner-interpreters, as well as veteran-dreamers. Impartation and Activation

I always dream. And love listening to the dreams of others...often ask my children what they dream. However, I always feel confused about not having insight into their dreams. I have so many books on dreams, but was stuck, and never had peace when trying to interpret. While reading Doug's book, I could feel my spirit getting excited. This book is not only a book of knowledge and insight, but a book that will activate your gifting. Within 1 day of finishing the book I have started practising on friends who has discernment, and would tell me if I am wrong on my interpretation. I am so excited about all that is happening. The Best Book on Dreams Interpretation

I have been to those complicated graph drawing dream interpretation classes. I often got lost in it. My problem is I'm too analysical on the symbols. Doug really opens my eyes to symbolic thinking which is absolutely the key to interpret dreams correctly. I have learned so much from this book and I plan to re-read it again. I have dream journals for the past 10 years and now I finally have some effective tools to crack those mystery. Now I can't wait to dream again :)

Philosophy and Education is divided into three sections. Part I deals with basic concepts in philosophy and the relationship between philosophy and education. Part II is a survey of how traditional and modern philosophies have faced the basic philosophic questions and what that has meant for educational practice. Part III discusses the necessity of developing a personal philosophy of education, one possible approach to a Christian philosophy, and some of the ramifications of such a philosophy for educational practice in Christian schools.

Excellent textbook on philosophy

I purchased this book for a class and was very impressed by the thorough and interesting way the material was presented. Many philosophical views are considered and brought to light from a Christian perspective as well. It is a great resource tool for me to use in the future.

About the Author
Howard Behar joined Starbucks as a senior executive in 1989, when it had just twenty-eight stores. His positions have included executive vice president of sales and operations, president of Starbucks International, and president of Starbucks North America. He has also served on the company's board of directors since 1996.

Behar has written an excellent book about the power of servant leadership and putting employees/clients/customers first. I bought this book due to my peaked interest surrounding servant leadership and found that Behar wrote and spoke to my heart. Excellent text for those entering entry level management and want to learn how to practice effective leadership. I plan on buying this book for my staff!

Great book, if you are the type to focus on the well-being of your employees

I purchased this book because I wanted to get an idea into the minds of head honchos. To see what makes successes and failures they've encountered during their journey. I was really surprised by how closely the way Starbucks ran their business was how I thought a company should function. I truly believe that for a company to succeed, you need to understand your employees and what motivates them to do their best. Many businesses focus on the bottom line and could care less about their worker bees. Here, they believe that not caring about your employees causes low morale and eventually death of a business.

I won't go into details of the book, but I would highly recommend giving this a read, whether you agree with their practices or not, one can truly learn something.

This book was given to me by a friend who picked it up on the bargain table. After reading the first two chapters, I bought copies for the people I supervised and we went through it together. Each week we read a chapter then went to Starbucks and discussed it. We had some great conversations and it helped them move into positions they were more enthusiastic about. While Behar may not reveal new startling leadership principles, the reminder of basics is important - keep focused! The book is more than just leadership principles for work, they also apply to everyday life.
