I have the orginal limited to 1275 copy of this book it is interesting to anyone who wants to understand the insanity of the witch hunt in this country and europe.The author desribes in detail the way one was tested to be a witch and the vocabulary is plain and easy to understand for all.A must for all occult collectors!

the mind of an inquisitor

Henry Boguet would have been considered an intellectual in his time; ironically, he was also intellectually crippled by his faith. This is a phenomenon that we still often see over 400 years later: the devout embedded within spiritual communities that provide intense emotional comfort at tragic intellectual cost. Tune into any political talk show and you'll see the fallacious reasoning employed by Boguet still being used today. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in medieval (and modern) thought!

A Fascinating Foray into Witchery!

From early in his preface, Boguet linked witches and other magical manifestations with the strange and wonderful: "Now I do not gainsay that the stories told of witches are very strange; for there is matter for much wonder ..." In this case, wonder for Boguet encompassed many qualities ranging from the standard crimes of which witches were accused-attending the Sabbath, practicing maleficia, making a pact with the Devil, and changing shapes-to the more atypical aspects, such as the Franc-comtois werewolves and zombies. His witches and witchcraft were thus broad categories, acting as catchall terms for what he perceived as abnormal and perverse.

This is an absolutely indispensible read for the Occult or Wiccan Scholar!

I like all the Wei-Chuan books

The Wei-Chuan Publishing Company (apparently connected with the Taiwanese Wei-Chuan Cooking School), has produced a good number of Cookbooks, mostly dealing with Chinese cookery but also coveing other Asian cuisines as well. I own over a dozen of these now and I like all of them. More importantly, I like all of these books for tmuch he same reasons and, accordingly, I have decided to do a general review that applies to each of them and then provide a few individualized comments where appropriate.

Basically, the Wei-Chuan publications are authored/editored by several different persons but the format is largely the same. Each book is divided into logical sections (Meats, Vegetables, Appetizers, etc.) and nearly every recipe is accompanied by a good photograph of the result with some recipes having additional pictures of the preparation as well. This feature alone makes these books well worth the purchase. Another feature of this cuilinary series is that the books are written in China and, at least as far as the books on Chinese cuisine is concerned, the reader need have no issues with 'authenticity'. I personally also like the fact that all of the books are written in Chinese characters and then translated into English. This has has an added bonus of occasionally providing some unintentional amusement due to a particularly 'unfortunate' translation but I specially like it as I am teaching myself Mandarin and these books are excellent learning tools. I often take one on the plane with me when I travel (along with dictionaries) and can spend hours happily translating passages. It is amazing how often the actual translation of a recipe title bears little resemblance to the English title provided.

Finally, I have to say that the recipes in all of these books are interesting and he ones that I have tried to reproduce have worked out well. Mainly though, I just like reading through these books for inspiration and enjoyment. The money I have spent has been repaid many times over.

The We-Chuan books I currently own are as follows:

Chinese Cuisine - Very good introductory section. Recipes range from simple everyday dishes to exotic banquet style delicacies.
Chinese Dim Sum: Wel-Chuan Cultural and Educational Foundation - Great 'step-by-step' pictures for many recipes. Bit too much emphasis on sweet rather than savoury for my personal taste.
Chinese Snacks - More of the same as in the Dim Sum book. No 'step-by-step' pictures but I actually like this book better.
Chinese Appetizers and Garnishes - I haven't attempted much from this book but I am thankful for the great 'step-by-step' pictures provided.

Favorite Home Dishes Chinese Cooking - As the name suggests, most of the recipes are simple and, thus, easy to prepare.

Chinese Cuisine Beijing Style - Lots of Imperial Banquet dishes and many exotic foreign influenced meals that have been 'Chinesified'.
Chinese Cuisine: Cantonese Style - 75 Cantonese recipes. Good recipes with nice pictures but a sparse introduction.
Chinese Cuisine Shanghai Style - Typically good Wei-Chuan quality but probably my least favorite of the 'regional' Chinese cookbooks.
Chinese Cuisine-Taiwanese Style - Excellent Book. Some truly unique recipes I have never seen elsewhere. I love to browse this volume.
Chinese Cuisine: Szechuan Style - I love Szechuan food especially but I would still treat this book as a favorite anyway.

Indian Cuisine - A nice book but be aware that the recipes Indian dishes for the Chinese palate, not Indian.
Vietnamese Cuisine - Great recipes.
Japanese Cuisine - Nearly as good as many books I have that are written by Japanese chefs.
Korean Cuisine - My favorite of the We-Chuan non-Chinese cookbooks so far,
Singaporean, Malaysian & Indonesian Cuisine - My least favorite Wei-Chuan book so far. Somewhat interesting but I don't look at it much.

Finally, I have a new Wei-Chuan book on order and will continue to buy from time to time. I will review separately as I read these new books.

authentic Shanghai

Having been born and raised in Shanghai I remember the wonderful dishes we used to eat which are not available in most Chinese restaurants not specializing in Shanghai food. What a pleasure it was to see and use a cookbook of Shanghai food, containing a good sampling of the cuisine, and authentic to boot.

About the Author
Sanford L. Drob holds doctorate degrees in philosophy from Boston University and in clinical psychology from Long Island University. He is on the core faculty of the clinical psychology doctoral program at Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, California, and on the faculty of New York University Medical Center. In addition to numerous publications in clinical, forensic, and philosophical psychology, Dr. Drob is the author of two previous books on the Kabbalah as well as articles on Jewish philosophy that have appeared in various journals, including the New York Jewish Review, for which he served as editor-in-chief for several years. Dr. Drob's recent work explores Carl Jung's intimate but highly ambivalent relationship to Judaism and Jewish mysticism, the connection between the Kabbalah and axiological ethics, and the role of the coincidence of opposites in mysticism, philosophy, and psychology.

Excellent. A compensatory dream for contemporary psychology.

I'm really enjoying this new book from my colleague at Fielding Graduate University. In the past, I've thumbed through the pages of Jung's Red Book and been both puzzled and amused by the tangled and oddly beautiful work that I found. Although I've dabbled a bit in Jung's work over the years, I don't think I understood much about the Red Book, from my perspectives as a clinical and cognitive-perceptual-developmental-neuro-scientist (puzzled), or as an integrative psychologist (amused).

Drob's book provides a schema for understanding and interpreting the Red Book, or at least the written part of the book. And while this schema links the Red Book to other works of Jung, Drob has shown that The Red Book may have considerable relevance for contemporary psychology. The book, according to the author, is psychology's "compensatory dream," ripe with important messages for contemporary psychologists. Our current field, with its focus not just on science but scientism, often ignores and even dismisses its philosophical, literary, spiritual origin. (Note: For other compelling challenges scientism, see the recent work of John Smythies, another author I recommend highly. See, e.g., Smythies' short essay The Fight For Truth.)

After reading the preface and introduction, I skipped to the last chapter, titled "The Red Book and Contemporary Psychology," and found gold. Now I'm gradually going through the Red Book again, with Drob's insightful Interpretive Guide in hand.

Here are a few essential quotes from the last chapter, which have helped motivate me to take a deeper look at Jung's Red Book, and Drob's Interpretive Guide:

"...Jung often spoke of dreams as compensating for a one-sided conscious standpoint... What conscious attitude on the part of psychology does The Red Book challenge or serve as a compensation for? To answer this question, we need to think in rather broad historical manner about the developments in psychology since Jung's death in 1961. In the past 50 years psychology has become increasingly scientized, far more so than in Jung's own time, and the practice of both psychiatric and psychotherapeutic treatment has become increasingly medicalized ... What Jung, in the Red Book, refered to as the "spirit of this time" (the scientific, hyper-rational mode of thinking) is, within the discipline of psychology, gaining a stranglehold on the academy and profession."

"The Red Book's compensatory message, however, is that while the pursuit of rational, scientific psychology is important and justified, it risks leaving out other of psyche's voices that must be heard. This point, made discursively in Psychological Types, is made narratively, artistically, and experientially in The Red Book. Jung's idea is that our quest to attain a full perspective on the psyche or soul must be initiatedd from positions that are not only rational and scientific, but also experiential, intuitive, and imaginative, and, in short, inclusive of the whole man. A psychologist, one might be inclined to say, must not only pursue psychological knowledge, but must also be open to the lived experience, imaginative possibilities, and artistic and spiritual pursuits that complement and give live to that knowledge. This not only means that psychology should reopen its boundaries to other disciplines, including those that are artistic and literary, but that it should also consider the possibility that things of great significance can be better or only expressed in modalities such as music, art, and literature that are neither scientific nor rational in the narrow sense of the term. Jung's use of mandalas and other paintings as a vehicle for achieving and expressing "wholeness" is a case in point."

"Indeed, Liber Novas might be a virtual nightmare for the new and growing field of "positive psychology."

"The Red Book, like some prehistoric insect preserved in amber, has the power to strike us as virtually "new," and perhaps for this reason, shake us from our routinized ways of thinking and living."

Explaining the excellent but complex Red Book

Jung's Red Book is a superb work of a genius. In it Jung records his discussions with the "daemons" that live inside his soul, inside his unconscious. But, as all his writings, it is complex. In fact, it is more that complex; it is extremely difficult to understand.
Sanford Drob does a magisterial work in explaining Jung's ideas. And he organize his work by discussing the pages of the book, and allowing us a glimpse of what was in Jung's mind at the time he wrote the book.
Drob starts with the prologue, goes through books Primus and Secundus, and finishes with a chapter discussing the impact of the Red Book Contemporary psychology.
If you want to understand the ideas Jung developed in the Red Book, I highly recommend you start reading Drob's book. It will allow you to understand Jung's powerful insights that was the germ of all his future work.

Good discussion and interpretation

Clear discussion and interpretative approach to Jung's writing. Having read others, I found this one to be superior due to a cleaner approach and dialogue which made it easier to follow and understand. Drob also proposes discussion questions based on Jung's positions, making this a valuable resource for discussion groups.

For serious mental drum kit workout

This is a "thinking drummer's book" - filled with challenging ways to spread the fundamental rudiments across a jazz drum kit. You will likely need to really spend serious time working these exercises to truly internalize the concepts involved and to get yourself to creatively apply the ideas behind leveraging rudimental patterns across the various kit pieces. This book gets you into the right spot - and ANY Morello book is an essential library edition just because of its author! - but the real work comes with what you do with the concepts, not simply playing the particular examples in the book itself. This text/software package explores the structural analysis and design of highway pavements -- focusing on the mechanistic-empirical design procedures rather than the purely empirical methods.

Focusing on mechanistic-empirical design procedures, this volume presents a comprehensive exploration of the structural analysis and design of highway pavements.

Although the current Pavement Design Guide adopted by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) is mainly empirical, a new guide based on mechanistic-empirical procedures will be published and implemented in the very near future. This book will provide the fundamental background to a full understanding of these sophisticated procedures.

The accompanying CD contains a Windows software called KENPAVE, which can be run on any personal computer with Windows 95 or higher. In addition to several input and graphics programs, KENPAVE consists of two well-known computer programs for pavement analysis and design:

• The KENLAYER program for flexible pavements can be applied to a multilayered system under stationary or moving multiple wheel loads with each layer being linear elastic, nonlinear elastic, or viscoelastic.
• The KENSLABS program for rigid pavements can be applied to multiple slabs fully or partially supported on a liquid, solid, or layered foundation with moment or shear transfer across joints.

Both programs can perform damage analysis by dividing a year into a number of periods, each subjected to different combinations of singleand multiple-axle loads.

Structural and geotechnical engineers can also benefit from this book by applying KENPAVE to the design of raft foundations. In addition to vertical loads, the foundation slab can be subjected to moments in two directions, such as those imposed by retaining walls, and the contours of positive and negative moments can be plotted. This information will be useful to determine the length and amount of reinforcements required.

The first edition of Pavement Analysis and Design was published in 1993. The widespread adoption of this book by so many colleges as an undergraduate or graduate text has encouraged me to write this second edition. A major event during the past decade was the completion of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP), which led to the development of the highly publicized 2002 Pavement Design Guide. However, at the time of this writing, the final draft of the 2002 Guide is still not available. It will likely be a few more years before the Guide is approved and implemented by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). For this reason, only a brief preview of the 2002 Pavement Design Guide is presented, in an appendix.

Other than those improvements in the computer programs that necessitate changes in the text, not much is changed in the theoretical part of this book. Although new procedures were developed by SHRP for material characterization and pavement evaluation, these procedures, such as Superpave, are still in the developmental stage and will be subject to change as more experience is gained in their use. In this second edition, Superpave is presented in an appendix. To extend the usefulness of the book, a new appendix on Pavement Management System is added. It is hoped that a more extensive revision will be made in the third edition, after the 2002 Pavement Design Guide is fully implemented and all the testing and evaluation procedures are finalized. Major changes made in this edition are the following:

The floppy disk containing the four DOS programs is replaced by a CD containing a Windows program called KENPAVE, which combines the original KENLAYER, LAYERINP, KENSLABS, and SLABSINP into a single package, together with the addition of some computer graphics. The software was written in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 and can be run on any computer with Windows 95 or higher. Detailed instructions on the use of KENPAVE can be found in the software program.

Section 13.5 on the AASHTO method of overlay design has been totally revised. The 1986 AASHTO Design Guide was used in the first edition. The guide was revised in 1993 with practically no change in the design of new pavements, but the design of overlay was completely rewritten.

New developments and information from the literature have been added to keep the book current. A new method based on the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion has been added in KENLAYER for nonlinear analysis, and new comparisons age made between KENLAYER and the latest Windows version of MICH-PAVE.

Three new appendices have been added: Appendix D—An Introduction to Superpave; Appendix E—Pavement Management Systems; and Appendix F—A Preview of 2002 Design Guide. Appendix C is combined with Appendix B; a new Appendix C contains a brief description of KENPAVE.

To provide room for the above additions, Sections 3.4.3 (on contained rock asphalt mats) and 10.5 (on probabilistic computer programs) have been deleted. Also deleted from the appendices are the description of the input programs and the programming details of KENLAYER and KENSLABS, such as subroutines and flowcharts. The description of input and output parameters in Chapters 3 and 5 and the illustrative examples in the appendices also have been removed, because they can now be found in the software program.

I wish to acknowledge gratefully the contribution of my colleague, Dr. Kamyar C. Mahboub, who wrote the appendices on Superpave and Pavement Management Systems. These new additions broaden the scope of this book and make it more suitable for a wider audience. I also want to offer my heartfelt thanks to AASHTO, the Transportation Research Board, the Federal Highway Administration, the Asphalt Institute, the Portland Cement Associations, and many others who have permitted the use of the information they developed. Finally, I would like to thank my wife Jane for her support in the use of our retirement time on this book.

So what I can say about this book? It's simply the best. From very basic to advance pavement design, this book is full of theroetical concerns about the pavement design as well as empirical methods for special pavements. It also includes a software to simulate a road different layers behaviour when loads applied on top. Very useful and, in my opinion, a must-have for those engineers who work in this bussiness.

About the Author
Peg Kehret's books for young readers are regularly recommended by theAmerican Library Association, the International Reading Association, and the Children's Book Council. She has won twenty-one children's state book awards, the Golden Kite Award from the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators, the PEN Center West Award for Children's Literature, and the Henry Bergh Award from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for Saving Lilly. A longtime volunteer at the Humane Society, she often uses animals in her stories.

Peg and her husband, Carl, live in a log house on ten acres of forest near Mount Rainier National Park. Their property is a sanctuary for blacktail deer, elk, rabbits, and many kinds of birds. When she is not writing, Peg likes to read, watch baseball, and pump her old player piano.

On the edge of my seat
By Never Too Old To Learn
I read this book so I could have literary discussions with my grandson. The story was intense, and at times tears came to my eyes. I have lived through several natural disasters, and this author really conveys the sense of danger and need to think of solutions for survival. I'm sure my grandson and I will have a lot to talk about. I highly recommend this book for 9-12 year-olds.

My reluctant reader now loves disaster

I read this book with my 10 year old son, a struggling reader who never wants to read and he LOVED this book. It's a quick read about a young teenager, in charge of his little sister, in a life or death situation. Well, one life or death situation turns into another and another. It was a roller-coaster for my son and he never wanted me to stop reading. Least to say, we've ordered more Peg Kehret books.

A Harrowing Escape

A harrowing story written first person from the eyes of a young person about escaping a rare tsunami in the Pacific Northwest when he was in charge of babysitting his younger sister on a family vacation. He and his family had read a sign that morning on the beach about what to do in case of a tsunami warning. This young man bravely went on a long climb inland after feeling a strong earthquake in the hotel where he was with his sister. His parents were on an evening cruise. The story is spellbinding and full of bravery and common sense along with a great perseverance in this young man.

A great read!

About the Author
Dr Antonella Invernizzi:�Social scientist specialised in child research. Antonella has worked as an academic at Fribourg (Switzerland), Cambridge (UK) and Swansea (UK) Universities.�Affiliated to the Wales Observatory on Human Rights of Children and Young People, Swansea University.�
Dr Manfred Liebel:�Social scientist specialised in childhood and youth research, from 1981 to 2005 prof. of sociology at the Technische Universit�t Berlin, actually director of the Master in Children’s Rights and Childhood Studies (MACR) at the Freie Universit�t Berlin and director�of the Institute of International Studies in Childhood and Youth at the International Academy Berlin (INA); carried out street work with marginalised children in Nicaraguain the 1990s; consultant of various German and international NGOs and the Latin American Movement of Working Children and Adolescents (MOLACNATs).

Dr Brian Milne:�Research consultant, specialist in children’s rights and related areas.� Co-wrote The Next Generation: Lives of Third World Children (Zed Press, 1989) with Judith Ennew. He has also taught and trained children’s rights.

Mrs Rebecca Budde holds a diploma in�cultural science from the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt/Oder, Germany and is currently working on her PhD. She is a co-founder of the European Network of Masters in Children’s Rights, which was established in 2004 by several European University representatives with the aim to establish Children’s Rights in higher education and to promote adult attitudes that recognize and respect children as subjects of rights with own opinions and views. She also coordinates the MA Childhood Studies and Children’s Rights at Freie Universit�t Berlin.
